New Warhammer: The Old World Battle March Pre-Orders This Week

Games Workshop will be taking pre-orders for the new Warhammer: The Old World Battle March boxed sets this weekend. These give you a good starting point for playing games set against the backdrop of The Old World, with games at 400-750 points.

As we've said in previous posts about these, they are a great idea. Much like Spearhead for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar, these are designed as a great jumping-off point for someone looking to play Warhammer: The Old World. Importantly, this is also for a legitimate game mode, unlike Combat Patrol. Some thought and effort have gone into Battle March, making it great for casual games as well as the plethora of tournaments that have sprung up around the mode.

As well as being a good entry point into Warhammer: The Old World, they are also a fairly good way for you to bolster an existing army if you're looking for a good core of troops to add into the mix. I think that's another good thing about these boxes. They don't contain a bunch of esoteric miniatures that you'll not have much use for as your army grows. You have solid, core, reliable troops that are going to pop up in any army.

One of the big questions around these boxed sets is going to be the price. Well, some sneaky chatter on the internet points to the majority of these Battle March boxes being around £115 from Games Workshop and obviously cheaper via your friendly local gaming store or independent retailer.

Now, you have to factor in that you'll need the new Warhammer: The Old World Rulebook with the Battle March rules in it and your appropriate book for your army but if you're diving into this with friends, that's what sharing is all about! I was sort of hoping, and time will tell, that there might be a list within these boxes explaining how to build them to use in Battle March so a newcomer can dive right in and have a good time.

There is an outlier amongst the Battle March armies, though. The set for the Wood Elf Realms looks like it's going to be a bit cheaper, coming in at around the £77 mark. Speculation online is that this is because the Wood Elves are likely going to get a refresh at some point and, to be fair, it's not the best of the sets available as part of this clutch.

So, does this feel like it's going to bring more people into Warhammer: The Old World? I think it should, especially if Games Workshop continue to do this for the other armies in the game. We already have the Chaos and Grand Cathay options on the cards, so there's not much more they need to do to make sure every faction has a set for people to use as their jumping-off point.

As I said, you will need the books in order to get properly started with Battle March but you can find a lot of the material for cheap on eBay these days if you're up for a bit of hunting!
