    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.ontabletop.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.ontabletop.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.ontabletop.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Year drawing to a close, Christmas fast approaching – are you happy with your hobby (progress) in 2026?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: play more Fallout, finish the MAWM minis

Answer: yes and no. No, haven’t painted and build enough I think. Yes as I have (more or less) played most Thursday a game of any sorts. Which is nice.

We shall not mention the C-word until it is mid December.
    I haz spoken.

Halloween may have been a day early locally this year, but it was fun scaring the crap out of kids ….
    /jk
I hope next year I can get my ideas done and complete for real.
I did get the Georgie 1:1 scale puppet sort of done, but did not have a real solution for his hands and his legs were barely covered.
And technically he should only have one arm as well as a red balloon.
But it was good enough and I think the night hid a lot of crimes.

Candy supply was barely enough. Only a few bits left and that was mostly because I had gotten two tiny packs of Sinterklaas themed candy as a last minute add-on. Am definitely going all-in on lolly pops (it was a big bucket …)

It was fun to see that most kids were nice enough to only take one piece of candy. A-hole ration was minimal.

Anyway … like I said a lot of fun.

As for hobby … I still suck at doing hobby, but planning little things does help me focus. I think I’m going to do that going forward. Small focussed projects should feel more do-able and stop me from wandering of to something else mid-stream.
ie : break things down to the smallest possible task and then do that one. Try to forget about the forest and focus on one tree at a time. It will be a forest as those little things get done.

Pledge: sort out the stuff I have been acquiring for the Winter Hobby season! This includes ECW, some nostalgia DBA, Necromunda galore, and both Orcs for Old World and Orks for 40K.

Xmas: I don’t do anything related to it until after Remembrance Day, which is 11 November. That’s a sacred day to me. This year, maybe more so after the training disaster in Wainwright, with the deaths of four Canadians, and serious injuries to 29 in hospital.

Pledge:  I’m finishing off another horde of Abyssal Dwarf Blacksouls tonight to make the deadline of the end of the month.  This week I want to keep going with the Nightstalker Scarecrows and get my two Abyssal Dwarf Dragon Fire Teams done too.

Answer:  I’m very happy with how the hobby year has gone so far.  I’ve got loads of stuff painted. Went to Salute as well as the local show.  Started a new system that I really like in Kings of War, played in a couple of tournaments and even made it over to OTT HQ to play Gerry.  All in all that’s close to a perfect hobby year and there are still 2 months to go 😀

    Pledge: Motivate myself better.

@sundancer stole my answer… yes and no. I did well on some things, not so good on others. I’ll try and do better next year.

which reminds me … 11/11 is a date for us to remember how to have fun. 🙂

@limburger – 11/11 is Remembrance Day in Canada (and other Commonwealth nations); probably the most solemn day of the year for any of us who served. It’s not a “day for fun”.

“In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.”
    —John McCrae

@grantinvanman for us it’s 4 + 5 of May. One day to remember and one to celebrate ‘freedom’. It’s gotten very politically charged as certain activist b*stards have started to make it more about themselves and not about the core concepts.
    /rant

We ‘missed’ the first world war by being neutral, but there is one WW 1 era poem that hits home :

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.

Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
    Obscene as cancer,
    Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,–
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
    Pro patria mori.

    @limburger

I have his book ; the front photo is pattern-1916 lower rank for officers. I took this photo of my copy of his work. Wilfred Owen was, sadly, killed one week before the Armistice in 1918. Utter tragedy.

also, my Regiment, the Fort Garry Horse, were granted the WW2 honours for liberating the Netherlands – and beyond:

Not much fun in Remembrance Day – my first, in uniform, was sat next to a D- Day troop leader; he landed, first wave; on D+1, his driver’s head was removed by a German 88, and the round went though his Sherman.

Remembrance Day is solemn, in Canada.

At the Overloon museum they have a British tank with a similar story from operation Market Garden.
Locally there is a bridge with the names and ages of the British soldiers that died there.

I only ever watch the remembrance events at the Waalsdorpervlakte on May 4th, because it is what these things should be.
No drama, no politicians making speeches, just ordinary folks paying respect to the place where a lot of resistance were murdered by the Nazis.

There is a movie about the battle at the Scheldt … (with lots of added drama, because of course there has to be 🙁 )

War is only ever ‘entertaining’ when it is on the tabletop.
The closest gaming has ever come to capturing the horrors of war is in ‘This War of Mine’.

@limburger – I’m told, but have not attended, there are many Dutch-Canadian events from WW2 memory; every year, the Dutch send a massive amount of tulip bulbs to a place near Ottawa for continued friendship from the Liberation campaign.

Let’s hope those memories and traditions never cease 🇳🇱🇨🇦

That makes sense and it probably helps that Canada was one of the countries a lot of folk emigrated to (either to escape the war or post war).
It is something that is taken very seriously by all involved, especially the older generations who have had family directly affected by the war. There are a lot of sites where the local schools have adopted the legacy in order to keep it alive.

I do hope we can keep this going as it reminds us that war is hell for all involved.

Halloween is done. It really is fun to participate in an event like this. Definitely need more candy for next year as the 3+ kilogram I had was just about enough.  I did notice that some of the candy packs were a bit big & heavy so I may have had less to handout as I had thought, so that is something to think about for next year.
