Blogging At This Event:
Welcome To The Army Painter RuneWars Hobby Weekend
We're getting stuck into the painting this weekend alongside The Army Painter team as they begin teaching us how to paint the Army Painter way and get some armies down onto the tabletop.
Stick with us for more tips and tactics across the weekend.
What's Inside The RuneWars Box?
We take a look at what's inside the RuneWars box that the Hobby folk here are getting to work through.
Packed with models and with plenty to get on with this is going to be quite the weekend! Let's see what Jason has inside his box of goodies?
Some Inspirational Miniatures
We look ahead to how we're going to paint up these miniatures we get a look at what Army Painter have to show off using their techniques.
As you can see there's plenty of ways to get your miniatures looking superb with their methods and we're going to learn more about that across the three days here at BoW HQ.
Meeting The Army Painter Guys!
We stop in with The Army Painter guys who are going to be guiding us through things this weekend.
You're going to be learning all about different techniques and so we thought it would be ace for you to know the fellows getting you stuck into the ways to paint quick armies.
Tips For Assembling & Cleaning Your RuneWars Miniatures
The Army Painter guys sit down and go through some tips and tricks for assembling your RuneWars miniatures.
Considering that they are made of a soft plastic you have to use some techniques that might not be similar to what you've been doing in the past.
This includes looking at what you need to do when it comes to cleaning up mould lines and more.
Tinkering Away On Building & Painting Underway
We've still got some Hobby Weekender folk coming in to start building their armies.
Some of have been tinkering away getting some paint down onto miniatures too and you can watch out for a video on base coating, spraying and more down the line.
Getting Started Tips – Priming Your Army
We get some tips from the Army Painter guys about how you go about Priming your army.
There are some things to learn about the way in which the spray works and indeed some top tips afterwards about the way in which you can use the spray.
Remember the spray and stick method and indeed how much you're putting on your models.
Painting Away!
We close in and find out what folks are going to be working on over the last few hours.
People have been getting some paint down on their models after the primer stage and people are powering on with loads of epic pieces already.
It's wild how quickly some of the models are coming together.
How To Straighten Your Bendy Bits!
We stop in with Jonas to learn about how you work out those bendy spears and turn them into good thrusting weapons.
This technique requires very, very hot water so make sure to be careful when you're working away.
John Paints The Daqan Spearman
Join John as he gets stuck into a painting tutorial, painting up the Daqan Spearmen from the RuneWars box.
This is a pretty in-depth tutorial so grab a cup of tea and get stuck into this one to find out how you can get some awesome looking Spearmen.
Getting Started Tips – Base Coating Your Army
We talk about some of the techniques that we can start to use when approaching painting your miniatures with base coats.
With that in mind, how do you approach the base coating stage?
What You Can Win This Weekend!
So, we have some awesome plans for what you can win this weekend as you comment on the Live Blog posts.
There are some awesome paint sets for you to snap up allowing you to get stuck into The Army Painter method.
Close Ups Of Our Work!
We're really getting stuck into the painting now and that means that some folks have pushed on and got loads of paint down onto their miniatures.
It's actually quite refreshing to be able to sit down and just paint for a few hours and engage with your fellow hobbyists as you do so.
A Spot Prize Giveaway
We have an unreleased miniature going to one of the lucky Hobby Weekend members!
In the true tradition of Fantasy on the tabletop we roll a D20 and find out who the lucky hobbyist is...
Focus Damn It! Focus!
We get stuck into the power hour as it were and push on with more of our miniatures.
It's great getting all manner of our techniques we've learned from the Army Painter guys into practice.
Some of us are even getting some of the units for RuneWars finished!
Bo’s New Strongtone Mixers
...is that Strongtone, or is it something more.
Maybe this isn't going to be as sedate a Hobby Weekend as we thought.
The Models Come Together
We focus in on some more of the work being done by the painters. They been beavering away for a while now and are looking forward to some grub.
Do you reckon it's mean to say that they should get some miniatures finished before they eat?
Rock Textures with the Terrain Tutor
We stop in with Mel, the Terrain Tutor and find out how he's approaching doing some rocky techniques on his Golem for RuneWars.
We will be stopping back in with him over the weekend to find out how the rest of his collection has come to life too.
What Armies Have You Speed Painted?
As we check out more of the work being done here at the Hobby Weekend we want to know what kind of armies you've speed painted, maybe even using these methods from Army Painter, in the past.
If you have cool armies that have come to life like this make sure to make a forum topic and share your completed force and we'll take a look!
Grub Is Up!
It's now time for some grub before we get back to some late night painting and then head off to the pub.
Considering the concoction that Army Painter put together for us earlier it's probably good that we're lining our stomachs!
Catch Up With Gareth
We catch up with Gareth, one of the Hobby Weekenders, and find out how things are going with him as he paints up his army.
We're all now full and ready to go off to the pub soon...after we've focused in on some more painting...just a little bit more.

This should be an interesting bootcamp, really want to see peoples opinions of Runewars. Have fun all.
I find runewars an interesting game. Easy to learn hard to master 🙂
Woo! Looks like the gang is all here today.
FFG just updated this to have a street date of April 13th, so it won’t be long now.
I’m scratching my head as to why I didn’t ask permission from the wife to come over for this one. It’s holiday time (unusual for a school teacher and boot camps) and I have nothing on this weekend.
You could comment and try to win that megapaint set How is that for a weekend ^-^
This is the first hobby weekend I’m jealous of not attending.
Really wanted to go to this one but my inconsiderate sister decided to get married the same weekend
I’m sure if you had explained it was a boot camp she would have rearranged the date.
I am just ready to learn a idea never thought of
Woop another weekender to follow. I enjoy these
This is the boot camp that I’ve been the most excited about. I love me some hobby.
There’s a famous quote I’ve read somewhere that seems to fit, “Let’s get stuck in!™”
I am actually a bit excited for this.
Looks so great. A pity that in my country do not do things like that. I will follow you in Youtube :O
I’m excited to see how this format of bootcamp works out.
so curious about how it plays. Will it be a the new king of fantasy tabletop miniature games?
Looking forward to see how it all goes. I’m really interested in the game, but as painting the lead mountain has ground to a halt again, I need more info on how it plays before giving in to temptation!
Man, I wish I could hop the pond to be there!
What a great idea! A weekend get together for building and painting armies. It is interesting what tha might be considered the least social aspect of the hobby can be the most social. It is amazing how much can get done when you have other hobbyists in the same room sharing best practices and encouraging your work.
My buddy and I have swapped sides from two base sets and will be doing some painting progress posts on our blog.
I wish there were events like this in the States. What fun.
Enjoy the weekend gentlemen! I’m looking forward to seeing the results of non stop hobbying in action on Sunday 🙂
i am a huge desent fan, so I hope that these are compatible with that game.
I have .. I don’t want to say resorted but it is kinda that… resorted to changing up my painting techniques to try to get stuff painted and on the table even if it’s not my best work. I have been using the army painter quick shade/dip and overall have been happy… I feel like I should be doing a bit more extreme highlighting as the effect from the dip I have been using does darken a lot of the colors quite a bit… but the sealing and protect components have been very helpful.
I think I should play around with the lighter shades and maybe I will feel like they don’t darken the models as much as what I am seeing… or it could be that i just need to start with more vibrant colors to compensate for the shade effects.
Interested to see how this all works out and what good hobby gets done!!! I just got the Test of Honor boxed set from Warlord, so would love to ‘mimic’ the hobby weekend with my own speed painting of the test of honor stuff once it’s assembled!
the army painter paints look like they have good coverage I could use some new paint.
Its really interesting to see how Fantasy Flight does a mass battle game. This has definitely peaked my interest.
This should be a good one
this is what i need, a day just to paint.. so jealous, enjoy it guys..
i have a feeling this game stole the elves from battlelore 2nd ed..
Have a nice hobby week-end !
I am interested to see how everyone does doing the Army Painter system from start to finish.
Waiting with great anticipation for my Runewars box to arrive…
Very interested to see the different ways these minis get painted. So far the ones they have shown look impressive for being the quick army painter method.
Really looking forward to learning some new painting techniques with this one – have fun folks!
Can not wait to get this game!!!
great way to have a hobby weekend pretty jealous people get to paint with others
all the best guys and girls have a great fun!
Pretty exited to watch along with this one as I constantly fall into the trap of not knowing when to call a mini finished.
I was really unsure about this game when i first heard about it, but now, the more i see, the more interested i am in it.
Have a great weekend guys.
This is looking awesome guys, really gutted i couldn’t make this one!
I really hope there are more hobby weekends to come, maybe I’ll be able to get up there with you guys
Been waiting for this one to come out. It’s a great way to quickly gain a very cool skeleton army, but real highlight for me here is of course that wyrm. MUST have!
Never paid much attention to Runewars before. Looking forward to seeing more.
I hope we get to see concept art for planned factions at some point this weekend.
Happy painting everyone! Looking forward to seeing these models come to life over the weekend.
Looks great! Gonna follow along all weekend 🙂
Tagging along for some tips 🙂
Nice prize…But I like paintjars like P3 and Foundry 🙂
Those paints look sick, let’s goooooo!
Just watched the update on using the spray primers. Really simple tips. Fantastically helpful. Heading back to my shed to unblock the spray heads after priming some figures earlier today.
Really like the idea of hobby bootcamps. With both Lloyd and Mel in the same room I hope they convince themselves to plan a terrain making bootcamp at some point.
Runewars minis look good the painting system really fits them. I am really enjoying the coverage today and have high hopes for the rest of the weekend. Thanks for all the great work!
Wasn’t interested at all in this game, now maybe. Looks better than my initial impressions.
Looks like great fun will be had all weekend. Happy Hobbying!
I bought the first Army Painter set and the paints are very good – especially the metallic paints. Probably the best on the market. I’d like the newer, larger set!
Im gutted I couldn’t get the time off work to attend, this kind of bootcamp is right up my street.
I am very very interested in watching this weekend as I really want to see good gameplay of it.
Great looking stuff guys. FFG do some seriously nice games
Looking forward to seeing the miniatures and how the hobby weekend goes.
Great weekend, painting brand new, fun looking models, painting them with Army Painter, a great paint line I have been playing with for about 6 years and playing with the models you brought to life.
Excited about anything from FFG, will be fun to see what happens.
Was hoping to be there this time, but alas I have to go to work in the French Riveria for next two weeks. I shall at least hope to see some lets play however.
Interested to see how the coverage etc looks different to a few of the brands i have used over the years
I want to use it in my airbrush
i do really regret not being able to be there. Enjoy guys 🙂
I am watching from Canada. What a great event.
I really wish I could be there. I need to learn.
I am genuinely gutted I couldn’t make this, I really liked the idea of focusing on the hobby side of things.
I’ve been using Army Painter paints for a few years and really like them. I like that they are dropper bottles.
completely new to painting minis. this is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
Wow. You guys are doing a fantastic job! I absolutely look this kind of events. Good luck to everyone!
Ok, it’s been a long while for me, but this boot camp has lured me back, looking forward
Me and my son could really use that paint set
I’m over the pond, but I apprecite getting to see what I’m missing! 😉
Intersting to see how the minis looks like painted!
good morning! time for some hobby crack
Good to see new companies getting into the fantasy battles busines
These boot camps are just one more reason to wish I lived in the UK.
Love the Army Painter range, it’s helped me to be more productive in the hobby. I managed to finish a 250 model KoW army in 5 weeks a few years ago using AP sprays and washes. Haven’t looked back since!
cya tomorow for more vids 🙂
@commodorerob at it again and trying to stay out of the limelight. make sure you get an interview with him @dignity!
Paint = Do Want. I” quite please with the paints my wife bought me as a surprise from Army Painter. I’d happily use more!
I started painting with an Army Painter Mega set and I love they keep expanding the colors available.
I’m interested to see what FFG make if a massed battle game
want to try this paints, i think i could do some awesome things with my conversions)))
Ive recently started using army painter in addition to citadel and have been impressed.
I will be following this wknds updates to pick up tips.
This looks like loads of fun. I’m a big fan of the AP primer sprays – they save soooo much time!
Nice. Looking for something self-contained, and a paint raffle ain’t half bad either.
Interested to see how far people get with this stuff over the weekend. I spend forever painting anything…
Got a copy of RuneWars at Adepticon last weekend. Excited to give it a try.
mmm game looks awesome,i hope i can win those paints to get me started to
I don’t know how it felt being there but it seemed to fly by here in the US. I would imagine that the day probably went by very fast, when you’re so focused on a project. First day looked like great fun wish I was there.
Haven’t tried the speed painting approach yet, but I’ll be taking notes and giving it a go….. Got too many minis to paint.
I can’t wait to get my hands on Runewars, looks to be an awesome game.
Great to see the product range in action. Interested in the work that’s done after the “dip”.
Nice day 1!
I’ll be keeping my eye on this…
ooooo prizes!
… I mean, yes, quite, painting stuff, well done and all that…
That a lot lovely paints.
Everyone’s stuff is looking great, I wish you all a great weekend!
I am trying to win one of the paint sets. I have been watching beasts of war for a while and thought I would toss my hat in the ring.
I do like this hobby focus. There’s little more exciting than a new game in your hands, but little more satisfying than playing with two fully painted armies. Speed painting is THE area I want to improve so I’m all into any tips I can pick up.
Would LOVE to win a paint set. Runewars should be good, loved Fantasy Flight X-Wing!
Good stuff guys. Looks like fun
sounds like a good an fun weekend very interested in the painted miniatures :))
Lovely.
I honestly don’t like the models *shrug*
Cool stuff. Very interested in it now more than before.
This is already a great set of videos and I can’t wait for the next.
Looking forward to seeing some games on those great tables.
Loving the concept of a hobby weekend, hope there’s more to come
I was super close to getting in on runewars, but I chose hordes instead.
After watching these, I absolutely want to get to a weekend like this in the future!
Loving the painting tutorials/videos. Wish we had big events like tis in New Zealand
Not always been too worried about boot camps, but this is the first one I’m actually jealous about missing. I really need to find ways of painting quicker, so hints and tips and a whole weekend of hobby sounds great!
Looks like an awesome time, wish I was there
Appreciate the hands-on nature of the painting demos at more of a level that is approachable to those of us with less experience, and with a clear direction
Awesome really exciting minis
This looks like fun!
This game is looking pretty amazing!!
I love the Army Painter range. I’d been out of the hobby for decades, and their dip process allowed me to get back into it and turn out figures I was satisfied with.
I often envy peoples painting abilities and this time is no different, why does it always look like a preschool kid just spat paint at my models?
What an amazing idea. Will read and watch all of the entries 😀
Fantastic Paintset Price…. Have fun guys this weekend
Just got back from Adepticon. Got to try out the Army Painter method there, it was really nice, quick , and easy. And thanks for this Hobby weekend it will help me with my Runewar models.
It was fun watching everybody’s progress. Have fun guys!
I have been looking forward to this!! Also I have around 50 miniatures with around 150 on their way with the mythic battles kickstarter project I have backed and no paint…
Can you help a guy out please?
These are great! Would love to win a set of these…
that is one glorious price
This event looks amazing! Are they ticket events or something? Would love to attend one!
Didnt realized how BIG that runewars box was…
good first day can’t believe how much has been done.
Great start to the weekend guys I definitely hope there are more!
Looks like a lot of fun, the boot camps always do.
I was a bit worried about what the plastic would be like for these minis but it seems pretty good and solid.
Not much of a fantasy gamer but enjoying watching the tutorials as well as hearing about those little tips & trick that make you think – “that’s so obvious why didn’t I think of doing it like that”
Get to the pub and get Jonas totally drunk on beer and those homemade Soft, Strong and Dark tones!…We want to see him totally trashed in the saturday show!!
i wish i could have been there
Cool game, looking forward to learning more!
I’m so sad to have missed this have to work instead boo hoo…
Got some of these figs from Adepticon. Looking forward to mounting them on KoW trays.
Looking forward to this. Loving the paint vids.
Looks like an awesome weekend that everyone’s having.
This does look interesting 🙂
I’m very curious to see where the game goes and how many factions, and expansions they are thinking of…. It will be interesting to see at the end the final colors people choose and how far from standard they go.
Looks like an awesome boot camp.
love these videos
Guys, thanks so much for this. It’s getting me so excited to see this game releas s. Can’t wait will I can get my hands on a copy, and can paint up my undead army.
Anyone adding their Decent minis as unit champions or such?
Excellent coverage again guys, from someone playing catch-up, a big thanks from me to everyone involved.
I need a nice relaxed painting weekend
Happy days ahead.
Great set of tutorials!
Wow some people paint soo fast
As someone who really is terrified of painting miniatures John’s videos make it look so easily and have left me itching to try my hand again. Amazing to see everyone’s work after just one day and how sharing little tid bits can be so useful for getting started. Az
This game will definetely be my “fantasy wargame” !
Nice start
interesting!! looking forward for it!!
Wish i managed to get to this one… my wife is getting twitchy with the amount of mini’s i have managed to gather since i restarted the hobby a year ago…. forgot how bad i was with seeing mini’s and having no restraint and buy buy buy…… only discovered beasts of war a little while ago, only if these boot camps happened when i was living in Belfast, would have been so much simpler to get to them compared to coming from northern Finland ! Lol
Some great looking minis and great tutorials.
Hot damn, now I want to try my hand at speed painting the set.
very good progress 🙂
it’s funny that some people already finishing ;p
Great first day!!
good job guys
Great products and excellent support of this great hobby. Wish I could be there personally!
Very cool. I just got back from Adepticon and got a Runewars copy there. Time to break it out and get ’em painted.
Loving the look of runewars ,I like the idea of having all your orders done before you play any turn ,it makes it more tactical and I’m liking the army painter sets they look soooooooo cool
Wish I could have been there for this.
Minis look great! I hope FFG can announce more further factions to draw more people in. Right now a few friends just want to wait and see before they jump in.
This game is fantastic! I just got my copy in the mail
The liveblog was great!
Oooo my wallets on fire! yup going to want both armys haha
That guy’s idea on Friday 16:31 update is brilliant, a nail polisher to get rid of mound lines.
I’ll definitely will try it and see what else to loot from my dear wife’s tools.
Muahahhahaha. Happy week for errónea.
Also I wouldn’t win a paint set as well 😉
Runewars = fantasy X-wing? Looking good but I´m not a fan of those bases.
Yup a fresh blade is key getting those mold lines off.
Looks like a winner.
Nice work
I am hoping I can get in and win…. I could use the paints….
Is the army painted given away already
Why did i just see this <3 would love to win a set of paintings ;__; !
