WW2 Wargame Iron Cross Evolves Into New No Easy Ground Rules
August 24, 2026 by brennon
Second Escape Games has taken their World War II wargaming rules, Iron Cross, and evolved it into a new version of the game that is now available through a brand-new Core Rulebook. No Easy Ground is available for you to pre-order right now.
No Easy Ground - Core Rulebook // Second Escape Games
No Easy Ground has been designed as a fast, brutal, World War II company-level wargame with a focus on the importance of suppression, close-range firefights and manoeuvres where every decision matters. All of this is packed into a new rulebook which delivers that and the clashes between infantry and armour at whatever scale works for you.
Unit Movement // No Easy Ground
No Easy Ground has been designed with Iron Cross' mechanics in mind, so players of the original game will find plenty to latch onto when it comes to getting started with No Easy Ground. The focus has been on making sure that every player feels engaged throughout the course of the battle thanks to token-based activation and reaction mechanics. I always like this, and variants of it, as they provide you with chances to react to what's happening in a meaningful way throughout the course of the battle.
Morale Tests // No Easy Ground
I think it's great that the game has also been designed to work at a variety of scales so you can pick up No Easy Ground and lock it in alongside whatever miniature wargame scale you've been collecting. I sense there will be a lot of 28mm and 15mm scale collections that might get some dust blown off them.
Weapons // No Easy Ground
No Easy Ground also features full Orders of Battle for Germany, Britain, the US and the Soviets, so you've got the four big players covered as part of the core rules. This is also focused around Late War, so it will suit your battles in North West Europe between 1944 and 1945. A Quick Reference Sheet is also included so you don't have to flick back and forth through the rules.
Bundle Options & Accessories
If this sounds good to you, or if you're someone who enjoyed Iron Cross and you want to play No Easy Ground, pre-orders are still available right now for the rules plus bundles, which include tokens and cards.
No Easy Ground Bundle // Second Escape Games
The Full Monty Bundle above comes with the Core Rulebook, your Tactical Advantage Cards, four sheets of Command Tokens, a Morale Marker Token Sheet and a Hidden Deployment Token Sheet. You can also buy the tokens separately alongside an individual quick reference sheet and a pad of Order of Battle sheets. The cards are also available alongside the card pack. Check out the No Easy Ground website for more information.
No Easy Ground sounds like a good set of rules and I've always enjoyed what Great Escape Games/Second Escape Games have created. I could see this being great fun for those seeking an alternative World War II wargame to try out.
