Are you a Mercenary or Protectorate player, but want to get your hands on a Gun Mage? Well look no further as Andy gets out the Mercenary solo Taryn di la Rovissi!
Clearly you don’t have as much love for this one as you have for the dwarves… I like the mini, it’s well sculpted enough, but I have difficulty seeing how she would be; by her lonesome, a necessary addition to a force… Oh well.
Taryn is a bit squishy, but she’s damned useful in a mercenary force (though the problem with mercs is.. there are lots of useful solos competing for your points). Black Penny is.. eh, okay. Iron Rot is actually pretty useful since the D3 damage is applied when you hit a Jack and you still get to roll damage normally (as with Shadowfire) ..and speaking of which, Shadowfire can be really useful, even if you only have one other mercenary ranged unit or Jack (e.g. the Mule). It’s great for exposing Warcasters, or the pesky Choir who might be using the Hymn of Passage on the Jack they are hiding behind.
And of course, since she Taryn has two magelock pistols, you can use these abilities twice during her activation, once for each ranged attack.
What iv done with her is had a big ol’ warjack blocking charge lanes to my squishy gunmages in Ashlynn’s teir list, and then had Taryn shoot him with shadowfire, so my gunmages can shoot through him that round. Really dumbfounded my opponent and gave me a turn of shooting he thought he wouldint take. I definately consider her a finesse mercenary. If she sits there using her two shots around just for the sake of shooting twice she’s wasted points. Iron rot and shadow fire used well make her a good supporting solo.
She’s a weird merc that seems more fluffy than useful.
4 Star Syndicate and the Protectorate seem like the only armies she can work for that don’t have better gunmage options, and even then, they DO have better 2 point solo options.
Adding Rutger Shaw makes her better, but now you’re spending 4 points, and for that you can get Lady Aiyana & Master Holt, who are a much sexier pair for the points.
Having said that, I think I would like to try and field Rutger Shaw marshalling a Talon, with Taryn along for fire support in my highborn list. It’s a decent small anti-warjack unit for 8 points. I could see them hunting arc nodes, or tying up a big honking heavy, hopefully stalling it with the Talon’s lance (and then dying horribly the next turn.)
could be fun or it could be a mess. 😀
I had actually considered running her with the B13th as a ‘fourth muskateer’. Still building my Signar’s and thought it would be cool. Any synergy there to make note of? Or is it just a big fat waste?
You need to remember, that Taryn’s Shadowfire shot only lets Mercenaries draw LoS through the model hit.
It really only helps with Highborn Covenant lists, where you get Gun Mages. If you’re using her as a mercenary for a faction. The Protectorate get the biggest benefit, where she can act as a ranged assassin… however… Kell Bailock is still better at dong that.
..or Steelhead Riflemen, or Mules where the desired target is too close to the covering Jack to hit with arcing fire. But yeah, of the merc forces only the Highborn can take her, sadly.
Actually, now that I’ve had a chance to flip through the Merc book, it looks like they just reused that artwork of Shaw and Rovissi for their entries.
Not saying that’s bad – it’s a good picture, no need to throw it away. I’m just wondering if they’re going to get any more exposure. That pic I linked before is a pretty iconic piece of IK artwork, a lot of people (myself included) would’ve had that image as their first exposure to the setting. Andy said in his unboxing of Shaw that that model was what got him started in Warmachine.
Now that I know that they’re canon characters and not a couple of nameless ones they whipped up for the cover-art, I’m tempted to try and work them into an army list somehow.
i would also like to say her Iron rot can work wonders on Khador jacks and do you have to use the same type of shot for both pistols or can you use different ones?
You can specify a different ability for each of her two attacks.. though don’t forget Iron Rot only affects hull boxes, not the location damage boxes such as Cortex, Arms, Movement etc.

Yeah, Rutger Shaw is the guy to get, I don’t rate her much unless he’s with her.
The review of Rutger Shaw should be out soon.

Nice. Shadowfire does seem like her reason for being.
You have convinced me to pick her up. Though I probably would have just to paint the model. 🙂

..oh, and the McBain tier list.
I think I saw artwork of her and Retger Shaw a while ago and aren’t they the two on the cover of the Iron Kingdoms Character Guide?
i believe you are right…

Def reusing the art from the MERCS book…I really like the artwork, in fact she is much more sexy moody badass chick in the art vs the mini.
