Community Spotlight: Questing Heroes, Black Death City & Gaslands
October 14, 2026 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We’ll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week…
…always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Warhammer Quest Heroes by hidoi
We start off this week with a look at hidoi, who might be behind the curve when it comes to their game of choice but is certainly doing a great job painting the miniatures. See what you make of some of these Warhammer Quest heroes for Cursed City.
Even though the game of Cursed City was a car crash when it came to producing it, it did come with some great miniatures and I think that hidoi has done an excellent job on painting the different miniatures from the set. The idea is that the miniatures have been painted to match the official artwork and studio schemes and I think that hidoi has managed to achieve that.
I think using speed paints in order to do that has really preserved the bright tones that you get from amongst the Warhammer Quest: Cursed City miniatures, especially on the characters above. Whilst it was quite a Grimdark entry into the Mortal Realms, it did have some rather colourful characters for you to choose from when it came to painting. This has nicely carried that through.
I also think that there's a great sense of the colder tones of Cursed City in these miniatures, mostly because of the basing choice. I think it works really well and sets the narrative for these heroes and the adventures they're going to be going on. There are more painted heroes for you to check out on the project and we should be seeing the different characters come to life for Cursed City soon.
Black Death City Characters by firelock22
Next up, we're sticking with cursed cities but in a different style. Black Death City might be the new hotness in the wargaming world and our very own firelock22 has been getting in on that action, starting work on some of the characters for their warband.
I am already liking what firelock22 is doing for their Black Death City warband, especially with the black and the yellow in show here. The grimdark paint scheme for the miniatures also works very well with very dark metals giving off that essential vibe that you're looking for in a game that's akin to Mordheim.
There are only two of the miniatures in this collection right now but if I know firelock22, there will be more to come very soon. As something of a simp for the world of Mordheim and any game that is remotely like it, I am always eager to see projects like this. It starts to tip me over the edge when it comes to what my next project is going to be. Maybe I'll end up slipping off the edge and falling into Black Death City proper?
Gaslands Demo by warbossd
Last but not least, we have a look at some work on a Gaslands demo game for play at Hereward 2026 and what work went into it.
warbossd was putting together a demo of Gasland for Hereward and wanted to see if they could make it nice and approachable. Fully aware of the fact that a lot of Gaslands players leave out parts of the game, they went to the effort of putting together a demo that should be straightforward for someone to dive into.
All of the different factions in the game then got cars and, by extension, miniatures to go alongside the cars. You can see some of them here but there are more for you to dive into over on the Project linked above.
As well as going into all of the effort that's required to make the cars and then the rules for them all so someone could pick up and play, they also looked at creating a nice, simple space to play in, which was made up of basic cargo containers. They then went about playing the game and seeing how it went with the attendees.
Apparently it went down well and whilst there were concerns that the game was too simple, there was still some time spent getting new people up to speed. There was some feedback from those who played the demo as well about the rosters and some of the mechanics that warbossd had included. It will all go into making the next adventure in the world of Gaslands work better at events. Getting a demo game to work perfectly is a fine art and so it's awesome to see more folks trying to nail that in their projects. It's worth having a look if you're Gaslands curious as well!
