Despite all the shiny, exciting, and wonderful new toys that are on BoW – there is no denying that GW 40k is what’s the game in my area.
I am giving up on “other games” and going to commit to 40k – that’s the local community, that’s who I’m going to get to game with. Say what you want: I want to paint and play games.
That is all.
Sounds like a plan. If gaming is what motivates you to hobby and you are only getting to play 40k then that seems to be the obvious choice. Personally I like a wide variety of miniatures and backgrounds but I mostly hobby for myself. I’m happy to play a game but it isn’t the reason I hobby so I can do pretty much whatever I like.
I assume you’ve got plenty of 40k ready but do you have a project in mind to work on?
It’s a good plan. If you wanna play you need other players or go solo. I plan to move city (I’ve been saying this for years) and I know I’d get a game of Blood Bowl. The fact I’d rather play e.g. Dreadball is irrelevant.
I understand the pain, been giving up and selling systems that no-one in my region plays. The one game I really enjoyed, Relic Knights 1.0, had 3 players in my entire country. I have found systems that I like that have smaller numbers of players, such as Frostgrave, and Burrows&Badgers so I struggle on.
I dont enjoy the GW games play aspect, but I still enjoy the painting aspect of some of it, so that helps.
You do you, but if that’s where the activity is, I can understand the shift. Embrace it. I am a big fan of the Games Workshop lore, the art style, the grimdark bonkers setting and the books. I am addicted to Black Library books; read enough of them, and you can’t help but get attached to some of the models or characters. Plus, it was my first introduction to miniatures at their shop in Bluewater with a huge Space Marine above the entrance; it’s kind of hard to shake it once you get bitten by the bug. I’ve never played a game, though, always just painted and collected, something I’d like to change. So I cant speak on the mechanics all that much, but for me it’s the whole package that keeps me going back for more, even if they have become pretty money hungry and far too harsh on related content creators and animators.
in the end it’s the people that make the game.
I hope you got a good GW community locally @grantinvanman
And who knows, maybe you can subtly convince them to try something new once in a while?
heck, if they don’t obsess about ‘official only’ miniatures you may get a lot of use out of your non-GW-collection yet.
