What height of a man are miniatures for the likes of flamesofwar and boltaction based on?
For example 5′ 8″ (1727 mm) / 5′ 10″ (1778 mm) / 6′ 0″ (1829 mm)
I think the convention is 6 footers, even through they’d be the exception in WW2
Yeah, I think most soldiers were realistically somewhere around 5’8” on average. I spent time in a military museum, and the WW2 and WW1 uniforms were around that size – also incredibly thin. These guys were FIT and not all swole.
I remember John talking about reenactors and the difficulty in squeezing into genuine WW2 trousers. Typical 28″ waist.
28” waist and the chest of an equally small person. Tried on a sergeant-major’s tunic once; that’s a dude who was not a kid when the war ended. No way it was going to fit me!
figure scale is based on 182cm for a man and 173cm for a woman.
I’m a 1:1 28mm mini then! Who knew? XD
I could be wrong here, but I always thought the strict 15mm height of a figure was based on the height to a man’s EYES.
Not necessarily to the top of his head or his full height.
This is why a 1:100 figure, 15mm, is always a little bigger than 15mm. And if 1/100 was truly 15mm, men would be only 1.5 meters tall, or 60 inches, or five feet.
Also, because of all the head gear (especially in earlier periods) would make it tough to measure where the top of a man’s head actually was.
Would the same apply to other scales?
@oriskany Well that’s the agreed scale from nearly all manufacturers.
But Warlord when they brought in their rather “bespoke” 13.5mm and got a bit of minor backlash for trying to lock in new players to being only able to buy their miniatures returned with the argument “No they are 15mm to the top of the head, and it’s always been measured that way” (never mind their other ranges being 28mm, I guess now 32mm to the top of the head although they don’t advertise them as such).
I see now that they are doing Epic scale AWI now, I was tempted for a moment but I’m not going to trap myself into being able to buy from only one company. I’m sticking to 10mm (measured to the eyeline), as Pendraken do a fine range, sculpted by N’Iron’s own Clib (who does probably THE best 10mm sculpts around with multiple variations to each pose).
