June 26, 2026 by brennon
If you've ever wanted to check out old miniatures from yesteryear, then you've probably used The Stuff of Legends, a website by Richard "Orclord" Hale. Well, Shaggy Dog Publishing are now working on a series of books that will catalogue the catalogue! Fantasy Miniatures of the Golden Age will be coming very soon.
The Stuff Of Legends: Volume 1 // Shaggy Dog Publishing
John and Richard, the minds behind Shaggy Dog Publishing, approached Richard Hale about working on this new book and this has turned into another labour of love. Inspiration for the first volume came from the way that Golden Demon winners were published in the past and so Volume I focuses on the Fantasy Miniatures from Hale's collection.
Dwarfs // The Stuff Of Legends
As well as featuring some stunning photography of these classic miniatures, it will also contain reflections on life as a gamer and a collector from Hale himself. You'll also find additional commentary by Alan Merrett plus Rick Priestley has written the foreword for the book.
Dragons // The Stuff Of Legends
As you can see, some stunning miniatures are popping up as part of this volume. I was particularly taken by the look of the old dragons as well as that classic Middle-earth collection. I have pored over this corner of The Stuff of Legends website for a long time over the years.
Middle-earth // The Stuff Of Legends
The Stuff of Legends is now back from the printer and the date when it will go on sale will be announced very soon. I think this is going to be an auto-buy for a lot of folks eager to add a glorious new coffee table book to their library.
Monsters // The Stuff Of Legends
I'm sure that plenty of folks within the community have their own favourite miniatures from this classic era of Games Workshop and other wargaming companies. What would you like to see them include as part of this new book and the series that will come out of it?
I think it will be fascinating to see what they show off once the Sci-Fi volume is put together. Are you going to be buying this?
