Would the Journeyman be a good first addition to the Cygnar battlegroup boxed set or would it be better to add something else first?
It might be cool if you guys did some videos on how to build an effective army, starting from the Battlegroup box. It would also be great if you guys did some how to play videos. I know there are lots out there already, But they dont really go into detail enough. With you guys having the ability to do longer videos, yours could be really awesome.
We’re planning to start that sort of thing, but first we’re trying to get some unboxing videos out.
Privateer Press have a huge back catalogue of miniatures and BoW hasn’t really covered it in any real depth before. So I’m going to be putting some more of these “different style” unboxings up, where I discuss what the models do in the game as-well-as what’s in the box.
Once we have more under our belt, we’ll be looking towards Tips & Tactics videos, then perhaps some army list videos.
Time is th enemy here… there’s so much to cover and only 24 hours in a day. 🙁
Oops… forgot to say about the Journeyman and the Battlebox.
The Journeyman Warcaster is a brilliant solo, but they come in at 3pts. The Battlebox comes to 11pts (with Stryker’s dicsount), so putting one in leaves you 1pt to spend.
You can spend the point on Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator (see the vid I made on him) or perhaps a Stormsmith Stormcaller… both of which are good… but not brilliant.
The Journeyman can run your Charger (from the Battlebox), but running it at full efficency requires 3 FOCUS, which is all of the JW’s allowance… so you can’t upkeep Arcane Shield… but if you run without it, this saves you 3 FOCUS on Stryker to use for an Earthquake!
The Journeyman can run the Lancer, but the best the JW can do for the Lancer is upkeep Arcane Shield on it… don’t run it with the JW as Stryker can’t use the Lancer to channel spells if you do… not really worth it in my opinion.
Finally you can run the Ironclad, but then you are linking a heavy to the JW. This is a risk, but saves Stryker a lot of FOCUS over the course of the game, and provided the JW doesn’t get killed, it can be devastating in the final turns, where Stryker can upkeep a spell, drop an Earthquakes and make a fully boosted attack, while the Ironclad gets 3 FOCUS.
In my opinion the best initial purchase for Cygnar (after the Battlebox) is the Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team… hands down! 😉
These sculpts are great, even though the pose is arguably a bit stiff… I love all the details and the different layers of armor and clothes !
And you’re right, the sword is smallish.
Didn’t see anyway to edit my post, so sorry for the double post.
I had a look at the Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team. Those are sweet models and I must have them. 😀
Hope you dont mind me asking but how many points would that give me with the Battlegroup and the Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team. Also I have also ordered the Khador Battlegroup. What would you recomend adding to the Khador Battlegroup to balance it against the Cygnar Battlegroup with the Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team added?
The Cygnar Battlebox + Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team = 15pts
15pts is the smallest game size that isn’t a Battlebox game. Of course you can play any size of game you want, but generally the sizes go 15pts, 25pts, 35pts, 50pts… and upwards.
Although around here 20pts is a popular size. It lets you add a unit to your 15pt force, but it’s not one of the “official” tournament sizes.
As for balancing Khador against the Black 13th… it’s a tough one… the Black 13th are savage in 15pt games… all that Brutal Damage (3D6 on damage rolls with their guns) and high DEF (which Stryker can boost with Blur, when they don’t have Stealth from Prowl), makes them awesome against all comers.
Generally I would recommend the Widowmakers as the first buy for Khador after the Battlebox. However, in this case I would probably go for something like Kell Bailoch (I’ve filmed a video on him… it’s due up soon) and Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor (no video yet, I’ll get to him though).
Kell Bailock is a 2pt solo sniper, who can shoot twice, he’s a good model to take advantage of any turn when the Black 13th don’t have Stealth, he’s is easily capable of killing one per turn.
Orin Midwinter is a 2pt solo who specialises in board control. He can stop a warcaster from casting spells within 10″ and collects power tokens on the turns he doesn’t shut down magic. These tokens allow him to boost attack & damage rolls or buy more attacks (a bit like FOCUS). He can also blast enemy models with Chain Lightning, which hits one model and D3 others (which are auto-hits) and so bypasses the primary defences of the Black 13th.
I like the stats but don’t care for the models personally. Plan on painting merc Rutger Shaw in Cygnar regalia. His coat and armour pads match Kraye’s pretty well, looking like his 2IC. Should be sweet.
I run my Journeyman with a Charger which needs 3 focus to get those two Powerful Attacks off every round. She is a great addon to any Cygnar Force especially if you run a warcaster like Caine, Brisbane or Kara Sloan that need a lot of focus for themselves. The only problem is her short control-area which would be 6″. So She needs to tag along quite often exposing her to enemy fire. I would argue that a Defender would be a better option for her, 2 focus to make it optimal and then 1 focus to keep Arcane Shield up. Like you said.
When starting Cygnar army I bought Journeyman Warcaster after buying Battlegroup. Unfortunatly its normal version instead of this alternative version whos sculpt I like more but still it does same things in game.

I agree with getifa. Some vids on how the game works would be great.
These are planned too… again… as soon as I can get around to it! 🙂

I like the sword actually. It almost has a gladius??? feel to it. I prefer the male Journeyman, But the female is nice too.
Thank you for the quich response Beerogre.

i might be a little late posting this but the hunter is an excellent option for Jr. to take.

The sculpt on these two is really well done. I do agree with it being a bit static, they always tend to look to the right for some reason.
