Seems to be a problem with the video at about 2:10. Tried skipping ahead but only get video without sound.
Looking good up to then.
This box looks great so after Circle, Trolls might be next Hordes faction that I pick.
I agree about Madrak being fun. Got to love killing the enemy caster by throwing your axe into his face after passing a tough roll.
Video is playiong and has sound now. 🙂
Ah, nothing like looking at a new video posted on a Friday evening. Its been a while since I’ve seen an unboxing in Warmachine/ Hoardes. Dont play hoaedes yet, still getting people to buy into Warmachine. But from the looks of it it seems like it’s one of the easier factions to get into. Would I be right in saying that?
Having seen these up close the new plastics are utter crap compared to the metal counterparts. Having changed some of the basic musculature of the trolls the new ones don’t sit as well. Necks bent farther forward and looking more hunched over. They also made the chins slightly larger and now it throws off the face IMO. While not human, the old facial dimensions looked far more balanced and pleasant. Their old sets were fine, I see no reason for this other than a cash grab. Change for the better is good, Change for the sake of change is not.
The redesign of troll lights seems intentional. Their primal artwork depicted the new style found in in the plastic kits. I can sort of understand it since there was very little separating a large trollkin warrior from a fullblooded warbeast with the old design.
Ive never been a fan of trolls any way, so as long as they die the same, I have no preference between the two styles.
Yes, I liked the old design as well, but i like the new design fine…
I think it’s just a matter of it being sculpted by different artists, taking advantage of the new material’s light weight.
Some will inevitably frown on that change… The metal trollbloods really were beautiful, for the most part !
BoW Romain
How is it a cash grab when:
– metal costs are so high that metal models end up going up in price so changing to plastic stabilises that or even lowers the asking price
– GW moves away from metal so suddenly everyone has to follow suit just like with fashion trends (not saying I approve of this though) in case they lose out
– plastic is lighter, so it’s easier to assemble and carry?
Not liking what they did to the sculpts is one thing – everyone has subtle differences in preference so if not liking the change in art direction was your point then fine – but calling it a cash grab doesn’t make sense to me.
I would add that the Privateer Press change to resin has been planned and under way for a very long time, way before the Finecast “revolution”, and that I have yet to see a single bubble in the PP plastic-resin products.
Not to be accused of GW bashing, I will say that many of the PP metals were subject to huge casting flaws, especially in the early years… Cracks, chunky bits and pegs, gaps… Way harder to fill on metal than anything else.
It’s a good thing they corrected that !
To be fair, my storm strider had a total of 11 pinhole bubbles, but they were all on smooth surfaces and easy to deal with. That was real resin though, I still stand by the plastic kits being plastic, and I have never even heard of a bubble in one of those parts.
I agree about the old metal models being bad. Mister Mcvey is an excellent sculptor, but those early metal jacks were so ugly I spammed infantry back in mk1. The sculpting quality picked up a great deal just before Apotheosis, then again for Legends.
If the new starter boxes came with different figures then it’s not a cash grab. Because it is not something they have produced before. But these are the same models. The same starting force. No in game difference at all. That makes it a cash grab. Playing on the fact that because it’s a new release, people will buy without thought to the fact that they probably already own a “Better” – IMO – version of the exact same thing.
Right on Romain
the metal are the ones I have and they are fantastic but to be honest the plastic should be more of an attraction. One must consider the drilling and pin jobs. I would of gladly gave up the metal sculpts to avoid the head ache at times.
As far as a cash grab thats total non sense. example would be how easy it is to proxy from a epic to standard warcaster…
using either model
mk2 card deck is under 10 bucks…
Privateer Press Rules 🙂
I prefer the idea of the plastics but the trolls are a mixed bag for me- Madrak looks fine but metal Impaler and Axer are superior looking IMO plus dont get me going re 3in 1 mauler (not in this set obviously)
Of course I reserve the right to say in the flesh that they are fine…hope to see them soon in hand as sometimes photos are not a good judge of mini quality
I personally like the new look Trolls just bought this set as I was having no fun with Everblight glad I still had the metal version of this Mandrake sculpt as the resin(its resin not plastic) version is rather small. Having said that I did prefare the old metal Dire Trolls
The thing I like most about the new kits is the plugs and slot do work. It always drove me mad when I worked with the metal models and a slot would end up being full. Will this plastic resin be perfect? Most likely not, but I’m more willing to work with it over the metal versions.
I prefer working with plastic or this new form of resin to metal
