How important is the depth of the bases in games like DBA 3.0, DBF or DBMM?

I am planning on building a couple of 10mm fantasy/historical armies. Currently I am just focussing on DBA 3.0 and DBF, but I want to take these armies into Classic Fantasy Battles from Wargames Atlantic whenever that comes out. From the little information we know, basing depth there seems to really be focussed on 20mm. So I was wondering if I could just use multiples of 20mm basing depth for DBA 3.0 or DBF. In other words, 40x20mm, 40x40mm and 40x80mm and then not use the 40x15mm or 40x30mm bases that are used in DBA or DBF for as far as I know. I don’t have the rulebooks yet, so I am not sure and would like to know the opinions from people who have played the game.

Basing depth is somehow important for DBA. People lose their minds over it.

A single millimetre will cause near-aneurysm levels of frustration. These are hard-core tournament people. Not a lot of fun.

Unless you play with sane people, who don’t mind you just pushing bases around.

I wasn’t going to enter into tournaments. It is mostly going to be me with friends, but every now and then I might play someone else who knows. If they are a stuck up twat I will not likely play with them anyway.

There you go. I couldn’t stand tournaments, so I just did what felt right for depth mostly. I still have my white DBA 2.0 with printed 2.2 addendum! Classic game. Completely unreadable rules. So much fun.
