Hey everyone,
I intend on playing some Lord of the Rings by GW in the new year with a friend: do a campaign with my Dwarves Vs her Moria army. While we are still building her armies (I need more dwarves, and characters, she needs to prime and paint her Balrog) and I have to get some rules manuals (looking at you, ontabletop online store but later in January) I am trying to suss out a matt.
The matt of course needs to be suitable alike or inspired by the Moria as depicted in the Peter Jackson trilogy of films.
Of course, I asked my favourite and most trusted community which I am beholden to.
I’m all ears for recommendations. Ive seen a few from browsing online but I am not really confident about picking.
This is from my Tolkien Encyclopedia
Moria, also named Khazad-dûm, is a fabulous and ancient subterranean complex in north-western Middle-earth, comprising a vast labyrinthine network of tunnels, chambers, mines and huge halls. The complex ran under and ultimately through the Misty Mountains. Moria is one of the wonders of the world of Middle-earth
I recommend the following mats
Deepcut Studio — Medieval Ruins — For this one, it has some grass patches but you can cover them in terrain. The benefit is that you can reuse it for other scenarios as well.
Short of building the table yourself, there is no perfect fit.
Hope that helps.
@mage those are all good choices selected @turbocooler
I’m particularly fond of the cobblestone matt, as I’ve used it for some test games of Khazad-dûm that I ran before laying out a campaign, ( which has yet to be played out fully).
I hope you share some of your game play with us when you get your game running! ?
We can never have enough Hobbit and Lord of the Rings!!!
If you can get someone to print it out on a mat then I’d recommend the Ruins of Trostenhal collection from Heroic Maps. It comes in 4 parts which all combine to make one really big picture of a ruined dwarven stronghold.
The big picture (on a very small scale)

Id also recommend the deep cut cobblestone. Can be used in multiple games and very verstile. I do lots of Middle Earth games on it to include my moria battles!
