Public service Super glue burns

Just found out the hard way that you can get chemical burns or start a fire from super glue.  I just burned my finger pretty badly and ripped off the skin when I tried to wipe up some super glue with a baby wipe that was on the table.  Apparently super glue reacts instantly with wool or cotton and creates  a lot of heat plus it instantly bonds .  Ripped off a layer of skin and got a big blister to show for it.

Acetone or naptha (lighter fluid, bbq fluid not gel) work well for debonding, if you look at the MSDS document for most super glue debonders you will find that 98% of the concoction is naptha, but rather than pay £5 for 50ml of the stuff you can buy a liter of BBQ lighter fluid for £1.50 :), so i always have bottle on hand on my hobby desk, as it works good for restoring ebay rescues and lots of cleaning when isopropyl wont cut it.

Any way hope your finger heals quickly, its a real sod when you glue yourself more than your mini.

Oh that sucks, I usually just let glue dry on my skin and peel off later which is lucky as I literally have loads of baby wipes lying around. Hope it gets better soon.

yikes … I now have even more reasons to either avoid superglue or use gloves.
At least I hope that latex gloves work. Haven’t been burned (yet).

Well actually I have to clarify what happened. I spilled the glue on the table and grabbed the wipe to mop it up at which point it soaked through bonded to my skin and then heated up. Still have a blister the sizo of pea on my fingeert tip.  At least it quit hurting.

I think the glue must have reacted with the wipe more or I buy crap super glue! I glue myself fairly regularly (messy modeller!)

I do use it on cuts as well…
