Chaos Refreshed & New Core Box For Warhammer: The Old World

Games Workshop had their big Summer Preview over the weekend and so now it's time to dive in and check out what they showed off for Warhammer: The Old. The Warriors of Chaos have had something of a revamp alongside a new way to get stuck into Warhammer: The Old World.

Core Set // Warhammer: The Old World

All of this comes as part of a new Core Set for Warhammer: The Old World, which pits the Warriors of Chaos against the armies of Grand Cathay. This set has been points matched so that the experience that you play out of the box is a balanced one for you and a friend.

The set comes with fifty-four miniatures, which break down into...

• 1 Aspiring Champion on a Daemonic Mount
• 1 Aspiring Champion with Battle Standard
• 16 Chaos Warriors
• 4 Chaos Knights
• 1 Gate Keeper on a Cathayan Warhorse
• 1 Gate Keeper with Battle Standard
• 20 Jade Warriors
• 5 Jade Lancers
• 1 Cathayan Grand Cannon with Ogre Loader & crew

As well as the two armies, you'll also get everything else that you need to play. That includes a new rulebook, dice, templates, a playmat and more. All that you and a friend would need to start playing your games of Warhammer: The Old World.

The fun part of the box is the addition of some new Warriors of Chaos miniatures. They are led by a new Champions of Chaos set, allowing you to build both foot and mounted characters for your armies. You can use this to make your grizzled commanders and your battle standard bearers, flying the flag for the Chaos Gods.

As well as the new leader, you've also got some new replacements for the new classic plastic Chaos Warriors. You will be able to get your hands on a new regiment that I would hope can be armed with a mixture of different weapons.

The images from Games Workshop only show off the hand weapon and shield variants but I'd assume we will also find options to give them two hand weapons and also halberds. They look big and fearsome and a lot more dynamic when you compare them to the more regimented Chaos Warriors that we've had before.

The Chaos Knights are also going to be thundering into battle. There's nothing more brutal than a Chaos Knights cavalry charge and very little can stand up against those cruel lances.

These new Chaos miniatures are then able to blend in with the existing collection from Games Workshop, giving you some great "core" offerings for the Warriors of Chaos. This forms the basis of the new Core Set, as you have seen above!

The new Core Set also comes with a revised edition of the Warhammer: The Old World rules. This includes all of the updates from recent FAQs and errata that have popped up over the years.

Rulebook & Battle March Companion // Warhammer: The Old World

The rulebook also now contains all of the rules for playing Battle March games. Battle March is a small-scale way of playing games of Warhammer: The Old World from around 400 to 750 points. Games can be fit into a lunchtime and they are perfect for those learning the game mechanics and also those who want a smaller tactical challenge.

The General's Companion also comes with more to bolster Battle March games. Inside, you'll get muster lists, campaign rules and six narrative scenarios. There are also more rules and special magical items for use in Battle March.

As well as what you've seen above for the Core Set, you'll also be able to get two new Battle March boxed sets from Games Workshop.

These forces are built to be playable out of the box once you've built them up. Much like with Combat Patrol or Spearhead, this has been designed as your entry point into Warhammer: The Old World and Games Workshop has started out with both Grand Cathay and the Warriors of Chaos.

But wait, there's more. The forces of Chaos also get something rather special. A brand-new plastic Chaos Dragon is going to be added to the mix, which looks absolutely fantastic. It is absolutely massive, as you can see when it's standing next to a normal hero.

Sorcerer on Chaos Dragon // Warhammer: The Old World

This set allows you to build both a Sorcerer on the back of a Chaos Dragon or a Lord if you'd prefer to go down the martial route. As well as making the Lord or Sorcerer on Dragon, you will also get the bits so you can craft whichever one you don't mount on foot instead.

Whilst you'll have to wait a bit for the Chaos Dragon, the Core Set is actually going to be made available for you to pre-order this coming weekend. Not long for you to wait before you dive in and start your journeys in Warhammer: The Old World.
