Ragnarok Miniatures Return With Wuffa – Where History Meets The Legends Of Beowulf

For fans of hand-sculpted historical miniatures, the latest Kickstarter from Ragnarok Miniatures is shaping up to be something rather special. Wuffa: The Englisc Invasion of Briton transports us to the turbulent world of seventh-century Britain, where history, legend and epic poetry sit side by side comfortably. Featuring a brand-new range of beautifully sculpted 28mm white metal miniatures by Colin Patten, the campaign introduces a host of Early Anglo-Saxon warriors alongside some very familiar faces from one of the greatest stories ever told.

Wuffingas Collection // Ragnarok Miniatures

Set around 650 AD, Wuffa explores the period after the Roman withdrawal from Britain, as Angles, Saxons and Jutes established new kingdoms while the native Britons struggled to defend their lands. The campaign centres around the Wuffingas, the "Kin of the Wolf", the dynasty that ruled East Anglia and whose legendary connections stretch into the world of Beowulf itself. The nine  Wuffingas heroes in the pack have been sculpted to represent Wuffa and his kin and descendants Eorpwald, Sigberht, Raedwald, Wuffa, Saexburh, Raegenhere, Eni, Athelhere & Aethelwold. Although they can easily stand in for any heroes or hearthguards in your games.

6 pt Anglian (early Saxon) Saga Warband

The heart of the range is a complete six-point Angle warband, giving players everything they need to build a force for their favourite Dark Age rulesets. Alongside the rank-and-file warriors comes an impressive selection of heroic personalities, including King Raedwald and the leading figures of the Wuffingas dynasty.

As we've come to expect from Colin Patten, every figure is full of character. The poses are dynamic without becoming exaggerated, while the equipment and clothing capture the feel of Early Anglo-Saxon Britain beautifully.

Warlord, Standard & Hearthguards

The Kickstarter campaign is based around a Saga Warband. The 6-point pledge contains the Warlord with his standard bearer and 3 points of hearthguard, giving you fourteen well-armed and armoured heroes to form the steel core of your force. Alongside them are 3-points of warriors, and while comparatively lightly armoured, these twenty-four men are still a solid block that will give your opponent pause in the Age of Invasions.

For anyone who has backed earlier campaigns, these new miniatures will blend seamlessly, and while the style of some of the helmets may be out of fashion, there's no reason why someone couldn't be wearing a hand-me-down from Granddad. Also, unarmoured troops and archers from his previous ranges can be easily added to give you some additional options for your forces.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the campaign is how comfortably it embraces the legendary elements that surround this period of history. Ragnarok Miniatures is, after all, a fantasy line that includes goblins and dwarfs alongside humans and rather than abandoning historical authenticity, Wuffa gently extends it into the world of myth.

Beowulf

The campaign introduces two versions of Beowulf—an armoured heroic version alongside the wonderfully thematic "ready for troll wrestling" Beowulf, available as a free miniature for full backers.

Standing opposite the great hero is the terrifying Grendel, accompanied by his equally fearsome mother, the Sea Hag.

These mythical additions feel entirely at home amongst the historical miniatures. After all, Beowulf itself sits somewhere between history and legend, recounting tales that would likely have been familiar within the halls of the Wuffingas kings themselves.

For gamers, they offer fantastic opportunities for narrative scenarios. As with previous Ragnarok campaigns, these are traditional hand-sculpted white metal miniatures, giving them a distinctive character that many hobbyists still prefer over digitally sculpted ranges. There's plenty of subtle texture for painters to enjoy, while the natural proportions and expressive poses make them equally satisfying to collect or field on the tabletop.

An Exciting Future For Ragnarok Miniatures

Beyond the miniatures themselves, the Kickstarter also marks an important milestone for Ragnarok Miniatures.

Following the success of previous campaigns, Colin Patten has announced that Ragnarok will now become an independent company, run in-house alongside his son-in-law, Max Worthington. The goal is to establish a dedicated online store, attend more shows and continue developing new historical miniature ranges through future Kickstarters.

For many hobbyists, this also explains something they've likely noticed over recent months.

The previous Kickstarter miniatures, which have been available through Gripping Beast from the Brunanburh: The Battle for Britain campaign, have been listed as available for a limited time only. Rather than signalling the end of the range, it now seems these miniatures are simply preparing to move across to Ragnarok's own retail operation once the new website launches.

Hopefully, that transition will also see the long-awaited arrival of the excellent resin village terrain pieces, which have featured in the campaign but have yet to receive a retail release.

If that proves to be the case, collectors will soon have a single destination for the growing Ragnarok catalogue of miniatures and terrain alike.

With Wuffa, Ragnarok Miniatures isn't simply launching another Kickstarter—it's laying the foundations for an exciting new chapter, one that promises to bring even more beautifully sculpted historical miniatures, with just enough legendary monsters to keep Beowulf himself happy.
