About the Project

This is a terrain project... and painting project. I bought some tiles to use in Marvel Crisis Protocol and I have just weakened and ordered the MCP X-Men Starter (which I had to order from america)... The old is some proxy miniatures that I bought some time ago from Etsy along with some scatter terrain from Walking Dead. How long it will take to complete is unclear and I started work on the project before I took any photos... so the first images will be part way through the project.

Two triads of paint. Not decided on the order to use them yet.

Not the right weather for airbrushing today as a bit chilly.

Hopefully warmer one day next week.

This is just a test based on one of the videos I watched regarding painting flame.

I’m using one of the pillars of fire as my test piece so I don’t ruin Phoenix.

The theory goes that after priming I should base coat with a contrast, or speed paint and I had Hazdreg Yellow Contrast, so that’s what I tried.

Won’t know if the shading helped until I start airbrushing and those paints arrive later today, but I won’t get time to airbrush until tomorrow at least.

Step 1 of the Phoenix project is assembly.

Nothing particularly tricky with this one although I’m only partially assembling to make painting easier. As I said before, going to need to airbrush for this.

To that end… I am waiting for a set of Army Painter Colour Triad Air Yellow to arrive which should give me plenty of colours for the flames.

The one niggle I have with the Unleashed Phoenix is that her legs are part of the main flame and it would be a lot easier if she was completely separated from the flames like the ‘normal’ Phoenix is.

When the glue has had time to fully dry I will prime everything white.

Phoenix and her Unleashed form arrived today.

She will test me. I’ve watched some youtube videos for tips on how to do the flames, so I have some references to use.

I may do Phoenix in green costume and her Unleashed form in red for Dark Phoenix.

First step is assembly of course. Then I want a warm day with good light outside so I can get to work with the airbrush.

This is definitely my most daunting challenge and I have no idea how long it will take to paint her.

Silk And Steel And Fire To Come

Not very happy with how Silk came out, but she was not the focus of the spider set for me.

Black, white and red wash that completely fails to highlight the upper half of her torso as it is depicted on the box art.

The ‘Steel’ I mention comes in the form of Asgardians which arrived today. Thor, Valkyrie (comics version not MCU), Hela and Loki.

And the ‘Fire To Come’ refers to another import from america… Phoenix and Phoenix Unleashed. I figured that after the month of being worried about my health I deserved a reward and painting the flames is going to test my airbrush skills to the limit.

Yet another Atomic Mass product that’s very difficult to get hold of in the UK. I get the feeling you need to buy most things on day of release, or better yet… preorder, if you want anything from Atomic Mass.

Forgot about Cassandra Nova when I was doing the sentinel box, but she’s done now.

And the proxy Guardians of the Galaxy. Not happy with Gamora which is why she’s at the back of the photo.

All I have left is Silk from the spider box… until I buy more.

Still have some of the TT Combat tiles that I haven’t repurposed for something else, so I decided to make one more tile for MCP.

Had 11 tiles and it’s played on a 3×3 board, so with this one I can pick and choose for the 3×3 or make a 4×3 (or even 6×2) if I feel the urge.

Went for a corner tiles. It’s not got smooth corners like the Battle Kiwi tile and it needs some pavement markings, but it will suit my needs.

As before it trimmed the sides to make the height match and used so of the A3 mdf to make the pavements. Sealed everything with PVA and water mix.

Road surface is a sandpaper sheet primed black then a light spray of drak grey. Pavements dark grey primer. Forgot to do the light grey spray after, but I will do that before I add the road markings.
