Ironclad dreadnoughts should be better against regular guys and vehicles because they get chainfists 2d6 amour penatration and front/side amour 13 krak grenades can’t hurt them (and they get an extra attack). You’re right though, my close combat dreadnought usually only kills about 4 or 5 guys in combat but 3-4 at range.
Shooty dreadnaughts for ranged support then Standard Dread for tank hunting and maybe small weak infantry killing if need be then iron clad dreads for planetstrike to take out Bastions and the likes and LRs
I havent had success with and Ironclad outside of Planetstrike other than disarming and immobilising a Chaos LR
after early success with an ironclad, lately i’ve found my opponents do immobilise them before they can get stuck in and wind up wasted points. i’ll definitely try shootier loadouts going forward.
You can assault if you drop out of a Lucius pattern drop-pod :-
Assault Vehicle: A Dreadnought disembarking a Lucius Pattern
Dreadnought Drop Pod can launch an assault the turn it does so.
(Note this differs from the rules for normal drop pods).
I suppose Shooty is better unless there is a group of 30 ork boyz you want to tie up. 😛
Black Templars Venerable with tank hunter, Twin Linked Las & Missile Launcher. A railgun and a Strength 9 AP3 missile Launcher. Why not? 🙂
