Veiled Lantern Society by MechaWhalestorm

We start this week with a look at what MechaWhalestorm has been working on. They have been diving into this project for the Veiled Lantern Society, which is being designed and painted so that it can work as a warband in games of Frostgrave but also in games of The Silver Bayonet. That means plenty of kitbashing!

Veiled Lantern Society #1 by MechaWhalestorm

The miniatures have come from a variety of different places. Some of them are from Wargames Atlantic; other bits come from the North Star plastic kits and there's even a bit of Warlord Games and Victrix in there for good measure. This is a great way to make use of lots of different kits and bring them together with a coherent theme across a warband of miniatures.

Throughout the project, MechaWhalestorm has been thinking about how each of the miniatures is going to fit into both their role in Frostgrave and within The Silver Bayonet. The Silver Bayonet having that fantastical edge does help when it comes to blending the two miniatures between the games and I think that MechaWhalestorm is working well to marry the miniatures up very nicely.

I also like the background behind The Veiled Lantern Society, which is very Into The Odd in its style (a great roleplaying game). They are heading to Felstad in Frostgrave from "afar" seeking its treasures. In The Silver Bayonet, they will be a retinue of the French who have been sent to investigate occult goings-on. I think it works so well and I like that you can create such a thematic, multi-purpose force for what would seemingly be two different games.

Grand Cathay by Poentje

We move next to some work by Poentje on Grand Cathay for Warhammer: The Old World. I was really struck by the bright colours used on these miniatures in particular.

Grand Cathay #1 by poentje

This is just the start of a much larger project. By poentje's own admission, they were pretty sold on Grand Cathay as soon as they saw them previewed for The Old World. A recent contest in the forums then had poentje looking at something that worked with the theme of fire. That's why we see this crew coming together as you see here!

Grand Cathay #2 by poentje

I really like the work on the Ogre in particular. The warm colours come through really nicely and I was particularly taken by the painting for the skin. Also, attempting to get all of the details out of the miniatures is no easy task and I think poentje has done that incredibly well. I also like how the classic red and blue work so well together on the miniatures.

Grand Cathay #3 by poentje

Whilst this is just a snippet of a much larger project, it's a good starting point for poentje to work from. An artillery piece and the crew give you a chance to paint some human-sized figures but also something a bit bigger so you can hone in on how you might approach something like that in the army at large. It also tests your scheme in different ways! A great, colourful start and one that I hope to see expanded.

Next, we're heading to a game that I am weirdly intrigued by right now. Gaslands has been one of the focuses for warhammergrimace recently. They have been painting a range of vehicles for use in the game as well as some awesome 20mm miniatures to go alongside them.

Road Warriors #1 by warhammergrimace

We start off with some of the miniatures. These come from the awesome collection of DarkZone 20mm miniatures by Mace Face Miniatures, which are a perfect fit for those diving into Gaslands and want something a little extra to include in their collection alongside the cars. These look excellent and grimey in the way that you'd expect post-apocalyptic survivors to be!

warhammergrimace has also been working their way through some more cars to be added to the game. There are some cool cars here with a little "something extra" in place. I guess we know who this fellow owes his allegiance to.

Road Warriors #2 by warhammergrimace

warhammergrimace has been working their way through quite a few of these in the project and it's great to see a good mix of different vehicle types popping up. warhammergrimace also has some great videos in their project about how Gaslands is perfect for newcomers to wargaming, the hobby and how it's good fun in general. I might have to head to my local Aldi to raid their Hot Wheels collection.

Road Warriors #3 by warhammergrimace

I am very tempted to dive into the game. Maybe warhammergrimace is going to be the one to tip me over the edge. I might have to go and watch those videos properly and dive into the rules to see what I need to get started! Oh no. A new obsession is happening.
