About the Project

Note on change of the title (09.01.2021): I guess it is quite self-explanatory. Since some people apparently follow this project and may be interested in following it forward, I decided to keep it alive for the time being. Original description: I intend this project to be chronicle of my hobby progress throughout the year. I usually post photos of my painting on the forums, but I’ll probably add more pictures here with occasional recipe and maybe a battle report from time to time.

Right, at the beginning if the year I planned to finish my Frostgrave table. It took some time but I’m about done for the moment. I have just finished painting and snowing last building. As for playability, this table needs some additional scatter and one maybe two higher ruins (multi-storey houses or a tower) but those are very hard to store, so I’ll refrain from building them for a moment. What I will do, however, is wait until Christmas ends and buy a bunch of little trees to add some colour to the monotone palette of what I have until now.

If anyone is interested, snow was heavily stippled around the buildings. It was created out of mixture (roughly equal parts) of white paint, white glue, baking soda and glitter.

Draakar, unusual piece of terrain but good in breaking lines of sight and useful in one of the scenarios from the first expansion to the game. I actually preferred Roman trireme, but couldn’t be bothered to design one (and at the time Thingiverse offered nothing like that. Most of the buildings on this table are 3d printed and come from some kickstarter. The stargate comes from Thingiverse, I added it as I mainly play in SF settings and thought it would be good narrative device to give rationale for even Infinity troops doing a battle around (that would need a lot of additional terrain, however, but would add one more uniqe table to my SF collection). Some time ago I 3d printed and painted a container inspired by Infinity paper terrain (Mototronica pack from Operation Icestorm precisely). This is my project post about it:

And a photo:

I did something different

I loved the design, but it had some major flaws, to name the few of them:

  1. It is hard to print, requires supports in several places, consists of couple of parts which each print for ages,
  2. The containers can’t be stacked one over another,
  3. Due to method used to attach the door, they constantly drop out,
  4. containers put one next to the other don’t break line of fire completely, there are narrow spaces between them,
  5. They take incredible amount of space to store, something I have no spare of.

So using the original design I actually re-engineered them. I simplified the texture on the walls, changed orientation the walls are printed in and  added hinges on the corners which made them fold almost flat for storage. I lost hinged doors, but those didn’t work for me in the first place.

The only thing I wasn’t able to address, was printing time, it still takes around 4 hours to print one container and probably around 15 minutes to put the parts together.

Another fast project, couple of hours in three or four evenings and one more member of Invincible Army is ready for action.

Oh, and I changed my photo setup – this are first pictures taken without natural light.
