About the Project
Note on change of the title (09.01.2021): I guess it is quite self-explanatory. Since some people apparently follow this project and may be interested in following it forward, I decided to keep it alive for the time being. Original description: I intend this project to be chronicle of my hobby progress throughout the year. I usually post photos of my painting on the forums, but I’ll probably add more pictures here with occasional recipe and maybe a battle report from time to time.

This Project is Active
Take me to your leader puny human!
You can’t help hearing those words when you look at his pose (BTW identical to hacking pose of Umbra legate, coming soon to this project).
Body stocking (?) and face (?) were painted the same way as on Caliban bellow, rest (including details and weapon)are some oils.
All hail mighty oils!
I’m having true blast painting with oils! Just look at that T-Drone bellow. It was really stress-free painting, amount of time you have to take your decisions, change colours etc. is insane. I guess you can really focus on painting, choosing colours and effects not stressing about blending or mistakes.
Step by step:
- Black primer (solid layer),
- White ink – airbrush points of light on black parts,
- Solid layer of 50:50 mixture of AP Dragon Red and VGC Red ink on lower parts of the drone,
- Stipple VMC Sunny Skin Tone over red parts,
- Transparent layer of the same red over stippled parts,
- Repeat steps 4 and 5,
- Black oil wash (only panel lines),
- Paint the rest of the robot with oil white and black 😉
- Add transparent layer of VGC Violet Ink over the muzzles (airbrush),
- Add transparent layer of VGC Red Ink on the very tip of the muzzle (airbrush),
- Paint yellow triangle with whatever yellow-like colour on your palette.
Mayacast Masterglass Painting Contest Q4 2020
As the name suggests it is quarterly competition held by major Infinity podcats. Usually level of entries is so high that I can’t even start to think how to achieve similar result. Nevertheless I sent my Krit Kokram in December. The competition was resolved yesterday, I didn’t get lucky and my work went with no attention from the judges, but at least I have my last Zu Yong design painted.
As a side note, I bought it early December and after priming I noticed that it is my first miscast from Corvus Belli, one of those weird tubes on his back is cast wrong. Anyway I had no time to wait for replacement, so he will stay this way.
Bromad Academy Painting Contest Q4 2020
After I won 2nd place in Q3 I received a cool prize, I could order design of 3d model of my liking (from weapons and bits for Infinity). I chose folded wings for Combined Army airborne deployment troops. I also considered that I must use that part in next round of the contest. Luckily, the main topic allowed for that, I painted Ko Dali, betrayed and disillusioned Tiger Soldier of Yu Jing who joined Combined Army and does pretty well there.
This time I didn’t win anything but three top works were very high level, you may check them out here: https://www.bromadacademy.com/2021/01/painting-entries-004-stealth/ (Frank was the winner with his amazing Taowu).
And my attempt:
A bit of cleaning.
I was told recently that apparently spring in Ireland starts in February, good 6 or 7 weeks before it does for the rest of the northern hemisphere. It is kind of hard to belive today looking behind the window…
But anyway, I felt the urge to do some cleaning. I’m not particularly rational buyer when it comes to hobby products and sometimes I get carried away, like with Colourshift pains that I bought a year ago and found them unopened last week… That made me reorganize my hobby storage. My space is limited and I have to have good access to all my stuff (otherwise I won’t use it, as those Colourshifts). I solved the issue (to an extent) with 3d printing. Behold my new hanging shelves.
Last mini of 2020
I finished her yesterday, literally last hours of the year. In effect she’s a bit rushed and more on the brown side than most of my Yu Jing, but since she spends 95% of game time as a marker and showing her mini is actually to your disadvantage I don’t care too much.
December was the most productive month of the year painting wise, mostly due to 9 SantaYodas I painted for the tree, but I also did two competition pieces – I’ll show them of as soon as the competitions are resolved.
Sabotage and Destruction Unit Caliban
I work on speed painting method for the Shasvasti. Otherwise I strand no chances of painting Defiance, which I expect to receive somewhere late January.
Anyway, where I stand now is seen bellow. I spent around 4 hours on that one guy, which is unacceptable from speed painting point of view, however, the method scales up nicely. I think painting them in batches of 4 or 5 would be a good idea, and each such batch should close within 7-8 hours.
Next step would be introducing more oil paints I guess.
The recipe for now is:
- Black(ish) armour:
- Black primer,
- VMC Dark Grey over all parts of armour,
- Lighter grey drybrush (to pull all the edges (I cant see them otherwise),
- Points of light (where they look cool) with white ink (airbrushed),
- Edge highlight with white,
- Overall VGC Turquoise glaze,
- Redo points of ligt with white (on smaller area),
- Shadows and blacklining with black oil wash.
- Red skin-tight.
- solid layer of VMC Sunny Skin Tone,
- 2-3 layers of VGC Red Wash with glaze medium,
- A layer of previous mixture with ca. 20% addition of VMC Black Red,
- Add some (ca.10%) VGC Violet ink for final layer.
- Weapon.
- Solid layer of VGC Sombre Grey,
- White edge highlight here and there,
- Overall wash of VGC Black Wash with glaze medium and a drop of VGC Violet ink
- Head
- Overall layer of AP Bone,
- Stripes of VGC Green or Black Green inks meeting at the top of the head.
- Mouth apparatus – VGA Alien Purple, Highlights with VGA Squid Pink, shades with VGC Violet ink.
And that’s the result:
