Community Spotlight: Sci-Fi Heroes, Misfit Miniatures & Spooky Sandy Skeletons!

Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We’ll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week…

Sci-Fi Heroes by draconis

We start this week with some more work by draconis on building a crew of Sci-Fi heroes to take to the stars in games like Five Parsecs from Home and Stargrave. What's neat about this is that draconis is embracing a bit of creativity and working on some neat miniatures that have been made using the likes of Eldritch Foundry.

This fellow was the one that caught my eye. He is called PK BL1-ND-R but he also goes by PK and "Wallace" to his friends. draconis was going for a Peaky Blinder-style character if you hadn't guessed already, with a bit of a robotic twist. I think the miniature has now been taken to another level by the addition of the Wallace-style colour scheme from good ol' Wallace & Gromit. It works so well!

draconis has been making good use of Eldritch Foundry for the miniatures that will make up his Sci-Fi crew. I quite like this idea as it means that you can use programs like Eldritch Foundry and HeroForge in order to make some truly unique figures that no one else in the world will have. Perfect for a skirmish game.

Layla Houston (above) has been designed as kooky but deadly and I think that comes across in the final look of the scheme. This builds on some of the other great miniatures that draconis has already put together to make his crew and, of course, the starship that they will ride around the galaxy in.

You can actually check out more of the work on the ship and a breakdown of how the new characters have been painted on the project link above. I like that draconis is making use of lots of different miniatures from different places in order to bring this crew to life. It works so well for a ragtag band of adventurers taking to the stars.

Misfit Miniatures by jeffersonpowers

Next up, we're moving from ragtag and instead embracing the misfits with a series of different figures painted by jeffersonpowers for a mix of games. We start with a bit of Crooked Dice as jeffersonpowers gets ready for Colony 87, which he is hoping is going to be a mixture of 7TV and Guards of Traitor's Toll.

I like the job that jeffersonpowers has done on these, especially with the addition of the yellow and the green. It works to make them feel like a bunch of lackeys who have been tasked with cleaning up something unmentionable down in the bowels of a space station. These would be great NPCs that you'd have to work with in order to solve some mystery or another.

The second miniature to highlight from jeffersonpower's project is Baron von Staler from a little while back.

This fellow comes from the Solomon Kane board game and is meant to slot into their roleplaying game. The idea is that this dashing fellow, brought to life with a wonderful scheme, is going to perhaps slot into Guards of Traitor's Toll but he might be a little bit big! I like that jeffersonpowers has done a great job to bring the details out in the sometimes soapy figures you get for board game-style collections. He works really nicely, especially with all of that gold on display.

Last but not least, jeffersonpowers also worked on some great miniatures from Reaper Miniatures to slot into games of Guards of Traitor's Toll.

These miniatures are a little bigger than the official 28mm scale Guards of Traitor's Toll miniatures but not by much. From a little further away, these should work very nicely and I think they are incredibly expressive miniatures. The larger "assistant" is brilliant and I love the fact that he's carrying around a coffin, which will no doubt be occupied sooner rather than later.

Silver Bayonet Skeletons by scribbs

Last but not least, we're sticking with the smaller games and heading to the world of The Silver Bayonet with scribbs. scribbs has been working on some awesome Skeletons from Eureka Miniatures so they can be folded into some games of The Silver Bayonet as Napoleon heads to Egypt.

Skeletons often get the grimdark end of the stick and end up being painted in a rather muted way. I like the dry undead sometimes because you get to play with brighter colours. You get to explore all of that bleached bone alongside the bright blues and golds that you associate with stereotypical Fantasy Egypt.

The idea is that these miniatures would be quick and dirty paint jobs that would get things done and make them useful for some games of The Silver Bayonet rather than sitting on a shelf (or in a tomb) gathering dust. I think the schemes have worked really well and there's enough depth being pulled out of these to make them pop that little bit more on the tabletop.

The idea is that they will be dropped into some games very soon and start scaring away the French and anyone else that comes poking in the resting place of their long-dead master. I think they work really well and the Fantasy edge to the miniatures, with the slightly more heroic proportions, makes them feel that little bit more uncanny. Something spooky for your soldiers to deal with!
