About the Project

For 2026 I wanted to focus on painting with purpose and actually playing games, so I've moved away from a catch-all painting log in favor of doing a separate project for each game so I can combine painting and prep with battle reports. But there are always going to be some models that I paint just for the fun of it, or for a game that, let's be honest, probably won't get played any time soon. This project documents those orphan miniatures that may not warrant a full project of their own.

This was my winning entry for the May monthly painting competition over on the OTT forums — the key word for the month was “noble,” and I had just picked up the Solomon Kane RPG Vault, a repackaging of the miniatures from Monolith’s Solomon Kane board game that they sneakily repurposed as an add-on to a reprint of the Savage Worlds Solomon Kane roleplaying game.

I’m not complaining — they are great looking miniatures, but I had no interest in the board game so this was a good chance to get them at a lower price without all the extra cardboard.

Definitely way too big for Guards of Traitor’s Toll though…

Gravedigger and Assistant

I bought this set of two models from Reaper thinking that they would be good for Guards of Traitor’s Toll, but after I got them home it seemed like the scale on the human gravedigger doesn’t quite match up. The Traitor’s Toll models are on the small side of 28mm, and the Reaper figure is just shy of 30mm — not a big difference, but his head and hands are disproportionally huge.

However, as I look at them now from “gaming distance,” it doesn’t seem like as much of a problem as I originally thought, so I may drop them into my next Traitor’s Toll game after all. I do need someone with a shovel…

Hairfoot Jousting is another game I would really like to spend a little more time with. One of the pitches in the Wartnose Jousting section has automatons scattered around the field that swipe at the jousters with swords as they pass by. The book-and-miniatures bundle included a model for one of them, but the rules specify that there are four on the pitch — I thought these Spartoi models from Crooked Dice fit the bill nicely.

I just couldn’t pass up a set of miniatures with that title.

A Fistful of Clints

From left to right, we have the Preacher from Pale Rider, Jed Cooper from Hang ’em High, The Outlaw Josey Wales, William Munny from Unforgiven, and Hogan from Two Mules for Sister Sara, a great film with a terrible title.

I had a lot of fun painting these, and I am desperate to get Dead Man’s Hand back on the table — I bought some MDF western buildings last year that are currently sitting on the pile of opportunity, along with several more DMH boxes. Hopefully soon…
