Anyone with recommendations for paint on gloss varnish? Very happy with my final matt coat (Daler-Rowney matt medium) but need a tough ‘under varnish’ to help protect against bumps etc.
Vallejo, Winsor & Newton are both good. toughest would be a Polyurethane but I’ve not used any of those in years
Vallejo do a polyurethane gloss varnish, which I have used quite a bit in the past. The only issue I have had with it when I have applied it with a brush is on a couple of occasions I have got it on far too thick and it has dried a bit milky. Very rarely happens but it is something I am very aware off when using it.
Thank you, Gerry and Robert! I will give those two a try. I will be cautious to not glob it on too thick 🙂
Personally I use army painter gloss and then army painter matte. Seems to work well, the only time it failed me was when I got a metal specter ops mini caught on my sleeve and he got flung accross the board which was made of course sand. But the damage was minimal and easily touched up. 🙂
I use the army painter as well and it really make Vaders helmet shine. And all imperial officers boots too.
Thanks, Lobstermooch and Sundancer! I hadn’t realised that Army Painter did brush on varnish so that is a top tip. I will add that to the list.
Who wouldn’t want a shiny helmet and boots?! 😀
