    I disagree @limburger

FLGS survive by having a hybrid format: physical for local gamers, and competing for the Friday Night Mayhem that is the GW pre-release carnage. All the stores in Canada offer 15% off almost 95% of GW product to survive. That’s the way it is. There are a few big players that don’t, but they are super rare, and offer points programs that equivalently reward buying.

CCGs are often split out of the FLGS here into their own store, usually attached, for two reasons. One, the unwashed nature of the players. No one wants to interact with them. Two, the CCG cards have become a prime target of thieves. Breakins are near weekly at some shops – wish I was kidding. The thieves are usually after … Pokemon cards. No joke. It’s became endemic.

I have heard stories about Pokemon addiction spreading to greedy *beeps* … Magic never got that level of insanity, or did it ?

I can’t speak for all FLGS’s over here, but the one locally is about 90% CCG focused for their weekly agenda (Yu-Gi-Oh is apparently big enough too … ).
It is a pattern I’ve seen in similar shops locally as well. It is very very rare to find a shop that has games other than that.

I have yet to find a FLGS that has a focus on Friendly aspect … but maybe that’s just me ?
It is very rare for shops to have any kind of play area. The one GW shop I’ve seen locally had barely enough room to swing a cat.

The only actual 40k/AoS gameplay I’ve seen in the wild was at last years game convention … and it made me not want to play anything GW. The ‘tournament’ tables looked ugly and the guys that had set up shop in the one area that had miniature games looked like they didn’t want to talk to anyone who wasn’t part of their club.

Maybe it’s me, but I think the entire idea behind going to a gaming convention as a club is to spread the passion for the game …
Or are gamers really that bad at this sort of thing ?

Which reminds me .. I need to get my tickets to this years’ show.

For my neck of the woods my FLGS is part of a franchise. They sell the CCGs and 40k but also sell comics, boardgames, a few systems other than GW and and some random merch. The Friday night is for CCGs and can be divided between MtG and OnePiece.

Surprisingly the Saturday crew has been generally playing Kings of War or Halo. There had been some Battletech but it was a hit or miss. There are some private D&D games I hear from some of the rented side rooms so gaming does go on in other ways too. I think that the 40k community has established spaces already in other stores and aren’t looking to expand/bring in new blood.

The territorial nature of gamers seems to be a thing too.

As an addendum I thought to inform a friend of mine about this movie as he had interest in SAGA Age of Chivalry. You lot might find it interesting as well.

Latest historical series I watched that was really good was “King and Conqueror” – historical drama around the events leading to Battle of Hastings. Thoroughly enjoyable, but you need to know a bit to really get the story. I’ve read extensively about the period, so for me, it was awesome. My spouse, was just confused – who, what why…

Inspired me to order a pile of Victrix for a project.

Tonight, I pre-ordered all the new Necromunda. Always enjoyed the game, this clean-up will be a good thing.

Did you see the Pillage starter set ?
I think it ticks all of the boxes for a starterset (dice, tokens, terrain).
So tempting … but I really shouldn’t be adding more to my pile of opportunity …

Today will be the hottest day of the summer at 32c, plus an air quality advisory due to forest fire smoke, so its windows closed, AC on.

Air is “5”; we hit “8” earlier this week which was thick smoky air. Nasty. Big fires in BC causing this.
