Modiphius Drop A Teaser For New XCOM: The Miniatures Game!

Modiphius has dropped a teaser this week announcing that they are working with another beloved IP and bringing it to the tabletop. It looks like soon you'll be able to miss your 99% chance shot on the tabletop with XCOM: The Miniatures Game.

We don't know much more right now apart from the fact that you can sign up to the Modiphius Newsletter to be notified of more on the game in the future. We can, of course, speculate, and that's where the fun lies!
My initial thinking about an XCOM miniatures game is that it lends itself very well to being a solo and cooperative affair where you work together with your friends to build up a team and battle the alien menace, controlled by the game's built-in AI mechanics. You could then have the campaign progression that you'd expect from an XCOM game, seeing your various characters level up over the course of a series of missions.
You could, of course, go the other way as well. Perhaps you could have players create a "squad" of humans, aliens and perhaps even EXALT. Then, you do battle in scenarios in the same style as a more traditional skirmish game. Modiphius obviously has form on both of these styles of game, so it could go either way or perhaps even both!
It could also be more of a board-based miniatures game, fitting into the same style as their Mass Effect game. The options are there!
Which way would you like to see Modiphius go with XCOM?

As someone who has been obsessed with X-Com since the beginning I’ve always thought about this as a tabletop game. It would work as a straight up skirmish with hidden alien deployments like the video game. I did once create some terrain based off of the game in an attempt to create a tabletop version. It was based of the roughly squared terrain you see in the video game to make cover simple but important. Also has to be d10 based for the percentages! Really excited to see where they go with the modelling opportunities as some of the aliens are iconic. I remember when they initially announced the new version of the X-com game the lead designer talked about how a lot of them were wargamers so it always seemed destined to happen.
“Hit chance 95%”
*shoots*
*misses*
EVERY FLOCKING TIME! XD
And if they don’t put that into the rules I’d be annoyed *g*
Yes you feel there may be a critical fail in there somewhere!
I wasted HOURS AND YEARS of my life playing XCom. This sounds fun!
Me too, none of those hrs were ever wasted!!
Will be intresting to see what the differences to Archons Chronicles X are. That was clearly inspired bei X-Com…but rugh around the edges.
Would have been good if Archon had supported Chronicle X, as i feel it could have been really good
They said in an AMA that Chronicle X2 is on the agenda…but they are maxed out in capacity. So maybe 2028…if this is not spoiling this. 🙂
I’m hoping for a cooperative/solo miniatures based game where we play as the xcom soldiers and advance through a series of scenarios.
Always wanted the first X Com boardgame, never boght it though. So let’s see what this i sgoing to be.
