Rising from the Ashes – Jodain’s Spring Clean

Some how every time I go to get some more painted I find another odd miniature sitting around, in this case I seem have found an extra Inquisitor – their on the painting handles next. There are only 4 weeks left to get these painted and one of those is half term so we stand a good chance of having a completed army ready for RE Play.

Over the last two weeks I got on and finished painting 10 more of the Firestorm Legion.  Same painting style as before with a start at halfords grey primer , drybrush with Sky Grey and the with Brainmatter Beige.  I had a play with two different oranges – AP Fire Giant Orange (Speed paint) and GW Magmadroth Flame contrast. The later was the one I used previous, but I actually preferred the Fire Giant Orange. With this batch I finally overcome my concerns about sticking the fireball onto the guy in the process of throwing it.  The Fireballs are painted with P3 Cygnus Yellow, the drybrushed with AP Lava Orange, then AP Pure Red and then AP Matt Black, each progressive drybrush was over a smaller area.

The basing was always designed to give a mountain feel for the army as the Phoenix lands are mountainous hence the stone and flowers used.

Looks like I’d forgot to add the Water Dragon to my listing when I updated the count last week.

I managed to complete all of my Hurricane Initiates and then painted up the four Tsunami Legion that I have managed to acquire whilst this project was on hiatus.  Both units started out with a Mid Grey primer, dry brush Sky Grey and then Brainmater Beige. Contrast paints Baal Red, Ironclaw Yellow and Speed Paint Fire Giant Red got the main colours down.  The waves are contrast Telasar Blue with some white to give the hint of foam.  I decided to base these guys as if the wave was just riding over the battlefield so that they are based in the same pattern as the rest of the army.

I should have posted this last week, but the start of term is always a bit crazy.

I worked through the Water Dragon, the base is took a while to get the right balance of colours.  Most of the dragon came together easily with the airbrush for help.  Alongside the Water Dragon I completed a block of 8 Avalanche Guard to join the rest of the unit.

Finally had time to put paint on these models, a batch of 6 Isawa Inquisitors completed, same style of painting as before.  It’s a good job I documented all of the painting I’d done it’s making it easier to pick up from where I had got to previously.

Its been a long while with this project paused, but I am back to it as we are going to prepare for RE:Play on 24th October at the Royal Engineers Museum Gillingham.

It seems that I completed some painting after I last updated this as the total painted now stands at 130, whilst the number of unpainted has climbed to 58.  I have purchased a few more Avalanche Guard, Hurricane Initiates and some Tsunami Legion (I didn’t own any of these until recently).  I also got hold of a Water Dragon, unassembled, to add to the army.  It does amaze me that there are still unopened blisters for this game still out there.

Well the Broadside show has been and gone and we changed games in the end so the drive to complete the Phoenix has drained away and so no updates in June.

I did manage to finish off some figures last weekend, the six Hurricane Iniaites and 4 of the Isawa Inquisitors that I had started in the last post.  I made a serious mess of the 5 Inquisitor and so it will go and be striped back down and re-primed.

Maybe I bit off a bit more than I could chew with this project, but I am happy with the amount of figures that I have managed to paint.  I will continue to paint this army, but I’m going to be mixing a few different figures in now to give me a freshen up – but first I have some 1:1 terrain to paint.

A slow down in production due to real-life has meant that I haven’t finished any figures, although the next batch of 11 are ready for final basing and varnish.

I did spend some time this weekend preparing the next batch of figures to be painted, which involved a bit of work to re-attach one of the Isawa Inquisitors to their base as the link at the toes had broken.  A bit of pinning and green stuff makes for a repair and lifts the figure a little higher.

Lastly I decided to strip back the paint on a group of Hurriance Iniaties which my son had tried to paint.  Having looked online I decided to have a go at cleaning them up with IPA, which I picked up from Amazon.  I was really happy with how well it cleaned up the figrues and how quickly.  They have mostly been left a bit grey, but that was the primer sitting in the IPA, which I probably should have changed between figures.

I’ve not got round to posting over the last two bank holiday weekends, which is strange as I’ve had an extra day off on both weekends.  Oh well.

Still I have continued to make good progress on the Phoenix Clan Army.

A bit of a mixture here, first off is the well known Phoenix mounted archers (who am I kidding), the better known Hurricane Initiates (there are another 6 that need stripping and repainting).

For the Avalanche Guard I decided that the grey slapchop would give the models to rocky look I was going for with just red trousers and an orange belt to bring them into the Phoenix army.  With them in the third photo is Isawa Kaede the master of the void.

The final photograph is a unit of Shiba House Guard, I’ve painted these to match Shiba Tsukune.

This post marks the point where I have finally got over half-way through the project and nearly past the two-thirds point.  The storage has also had to expand to allow for the next few batches of miniatures so rather than one GW three layer case it now has two (good job I had an empty one in the cave).

The downside to today’s post is that there will be a delay in getting these on a show table as their opponents aren’t going to be completed.  On the upside it gives me the time and opportunity to build out the army and add my test of honour miniatures into the Phoenix Clan.
