Savage Night Action at Empress Augusta Bay (WW2 Naval Wargame, P1)

General Quarters, General Quarters!  All hands to action stations for our 1:1800 recreation of the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, a WW2 naval action between the US and Japan in November, 1943.

This is a gunnery action between surface warfare ships, fought at night in the Solomon Islands.  There were plenty of surface gun duels like this is the Pacific, all fought at night because of the dominance of airpower over naval operations.

We’re trying out a new wargame system called “Gunflashes at Midnight” – still in pre-alpha playtesting to see how it runs with live players.

Will the Americans win out with their faster-firing, radar-controlled guns?  Or will the Japanese score an upset with their larger guns and dreaded “Long Lance” torpedo?

Playtesting a new system I have under design to more quickly and simply run in a club environment surface World War II naval engagements (the vast majority of which took place at night):  Gunflashes at Midnight.  Our first subject was the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, including 22 ships in the wee hours of November 2, 1943 off the west Coast of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands.

We’re trying a brand new system (at least for us) here on the channel, One Hour Skirmish Wargame rules by John Lambshead.  The scenario takes place during Operation Cedar Falls in the Vietnam War.

Specifically, we have elements of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment tasked with clearing a Viet Cong village in the infamous “Iron Triangle,” a dreaded stretch of communist-controlled territory northwest of Saigon.

Can the troopers of 11th Cav clear the vill, complete with booby traps, tunnels, and hidden VC units?

Join us at the South Florida Miniature Gaming Club for a scenario set in a conflict rarely explored on the table, the Bosnian War of the early 1990s.  The scenario recreates the engagement at Brdo Žuč, fought just north of Sarajevo on 8 June, 1992.

Sarajevo had recently been put under siege by the VRS, a faction of Bosnian Serbs largely drawn from remnants of the former Yugoslav National Army (JNA).  In an effort to mitigate the siege, elements of the ARBiH (Army of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina) is attacking Serb-held high ground at Brdo Žuč, or Žuč Hill.

Can the Bosnians crack the Serb siege positions, or will the Serbs hold fast to tighten their stranglehold on Sarajevo?

Join @oriskany, @brucelea, and @rasmus as they finish up their desert scenario in Avalon Hill’s classic “Panzer Leader” system.  The scenario recreates one of the chaotic engagements during Operation Crusader, fought in Libya between the German and British forces in November, 1941.
