The initial Idea
Well there I was with this base coated gun metal Custodes Figure.
How did I paint, what scheme. The idea was to try and avoid the classic gold or silver. Most of the females on the family were probably going to paint theirs n various garish yellows ,purples and pink on colour change paints. I wanted to do something he could still use in a game but would be different. Painting him as a Raven Guard Custodes was one thought, another was tthe Black and Red of Battletechs Wolf’s Dragoons.
By scheer chance I happened to see the film the ‘Mouse that Roared’ with Peter Sellars playing most of tbe main characters. For tbose who dont know it about a small Duchy in Europe (similar to Lichenstein or Montr Carlo) declaring was on the U.S. to lose and claim martial aide.
So I thought what was the national emblem of the said country?
Grand Grand Duchy of Fenwick.
Who by sheer good luck had as its flag.
This is were it sat for a couple of weeks but the impending birthday was coming up so yesterday I started on it, having re base coated it white.
I first gave it an all over base coat of GW Apothacary White thinned out to about 2/3rds paint one water, , thinning it out bit more if it appeared to be too grey.
One it had dried to re highlight tbe figure I dry brushed it with Speedpaint white. Not only for highlighting the white of most of the armour but to help with later shading when contrasts and Speedpaints are later added.
The scheme of Grand Fenwick really suited the figure with the numerous Double headed eagles which with the coat of arms as the guide ,all the Eagles were painted with GW contrast Gryph hound Orange leaving only tbe beaks talons and filligory as white at this stage.
The Inside of the cloak was done with Speedpaints purple swarm, and tbe out side was their Bright red. A litle bit if Speedpaints leather brown was added to the obvious belts. The Sword was done Vallejo Shining Silver, with the hilt then painted with Speedpaint yellow as were the outside of sheilds. Plus Shoulder armour beaks and taons on the heraldry.
Finally a thin coat of Agrax Eartbshade abouy 50/50 water was put on most of the eagle emblems the helmet plume and the cloak for a bit of extra shading.
The base was given a coat of GW Gyph charger Grey. With a simple black Surround.
All but the Sword were givem a varnish of AK Ultra Matte with the Sword and odd bits on armour done in Gloss Varnish.
So here I give you:
Sir Pentyn De Grasse, Captain of tbe Ducal Guard of the Grand Duchy of Fenwick.
So tber ends a nice little project. Only trouble is I really like tbe scheme and wonder if I sbould paint tbe whole guard.
