### Start of shameless copy and paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/
### End of shameless copy and paste ###
Question of the week:
- If you finally acknowledge that you hobby space is more a dump than a place of happiness: where do you start cleaning?
And now back to the show.
April 19, 2026 at 1:08 pm #1971578My pledge: finally finish Fallout (really this time) and clean up the mess!
Answers I have none. It’s always a “I just picked up a thing and now everything looks worse!”
Music:
April 19, 2026 at 1:26 pm #1971579Pledge: Get Elwing’s Guard Cavalry for the Dogs of War SCC army and then move on to the next one. Probably The Alcatani Fellowship.
Answer: I love a bit of organising and tidying. Do need to be in the right mood for it but that’s what spring is for, right? I usually start with the thing that got messy most recently – like my painting station. Tidying that often requires putting things away and then having to find places to put things requires further tidying so it spreads exponentially, like a virus. Alternatively I have things like shelves or drawer systems that are just begging to be reordered and reorganised. Love it.
For collectors of other things yesterday was Record Store Day in the UK. No, I don’t know why it isn’t called Record Shop Day. In honour of that and for all those people whose wallet is hurting as badly as mine does after a wargames show (And again proof that there is a Half Man/ Half Biscuit song for every occasion):
April 19, 2026 at 4:18 pm #1971592Pledge: more Nurgle, then I’m on my to Mexico on Friday. Nine nights in Mexico City/Puebla. No snow!
Mess: despite having an obscene level of unbuilt stuff, my hobby area is extremely organized. I use my area well to at least hoard what I have…
April 19, 2026 at 4:57 pm #1971600My pledge is to finish the last five Heroes of Might and Magic 3 models. I was going to just contrast them, but the golden button has motivated me to paint them with a bit more effort.
- If you finally acknowledge that you hobby space is more a dump than a place of happiness: where do you start cleaning? – My hobby space isn’t a problem. I always keep it well organised because that’s just how I am.
April 19, 2026 at 6:02 pm #1971614Pledge: Paint some X-Men. Assemble the the new arrivals when they arrive… not X-Men… I ‘needed‘ Spider-ham who is part of a bundle with Spiderman Noir and Silk. Know little about Silk, but a universe containing Spider-ham and Noir is a better place.
My hobby space is my house. I have books, games, miniatures and stuff everywhere. The mess exists in the space where I am doing hobby at the moment. I tidy up after I’m done. The main hobby space is my gaming room and I tidy that when I need the dining table, or have a a gaming session due.
April 19, 2026 at 7:47 pm #1971615Spider-pig!
April 20, 2026 at 11:54 am #1971646Pledge::
Cataloging what I have on the shelves and what I really need to finish some projects.
(side note:: this weekend was the local Library Book sale. I snagged 17 hardbacks, 6 paperbacks, and a stack of hobby magazines and spent less than a $20 bill! Pretty stoked about that haul)
Question of the week::
If you finally acknowledge that you hobby space is more a dump than a place of happiness: where do you start cleaning?
Answer::
My hobby space is a safe space to unwind and relax. Cleaning it is needed from time to time. But I have seen times when I was so obsessed about it staying clean that I made excuses to not do hobby just so I wouldn’t mess it up! DON’T be afraid to get in there and do some hobby! 😉👍
April 20, 2026 at 12:17 pm #1971648It’s Monday.
Some very interesting takes on “how to keep clean”. I would like to pose a follow up question: how many of you have a hobby room that serves more than one purpose? For me it’s not just hobby but also business so keeping it reasonably clean is kind of a must to not loose control.
April 20, 2026 at 12:54 pm #1971670Follow-up answer: I have a dedicated hobby room. That said the capacity to make mess is severely restricted as the house is for sale so it has to be returned to ‘show standard’ at a day’s notice. I’ve had to pack away my airbrush station and about half of my paints as they cluttered the place up too much. I’m looking forward to moving when I’ll have less space but, as I live on my own, I can have my hobby spread out a bit across the other rooms. I’ll still keep hobby out of the bedroom though, just like I don’t have TV or internet enabled devices in their either. You need somewhere to go where all of that mental noise, good or bad, isn’t there.
April 20, 2026 at 1:11 pm #1971672You need somewhere to go where all of that mental noise, good or bad, isn’t there.
100% with you on that.
April 20, 2026 at 1:57 pm #1971683My hobby room is my games room and dining room. I paint where the light is best at the time.
I use the organised chaos system. to an outsider it looks a mess, but I can find what I want when I need it… mostly.
Sometimes I look for something I haven’t used in a few years and it frustrates me if it takes longer than 5 minutes to locate it because I put it somewhere safe (that seemed logical at the time, but obviously isn’t)
April 20, 2026 at 2:48 pm #1971704My hobby room is a full bedroom that is mine; the room even has an attached full bathroom. I use it for music, computer, and I have a desk for building, and a second desk for painting. Helps keep the sanding/filing mess to one place. Also means I can work on two projects at the same time now.
April 20, 2026 at 2:54 pm #1971705100% with you on that.
Glad to hear it. Sleep hygiene is definitely a thing people.
Pledge update. I’m finished with Elwing’s Guard Cavalry. On to the Alcatani Fellowship now. I’d like to get them and another big unit, probably The Knights of the Sacred Flame finished before the end of the month. This will take me past 365 completed for the year which will be the quickest I’ve got the that point in any year since I started keeping proper records.
April 20, 2026 at 5:55 pm #1971721Pledge – I made progress on some Orks Waaaagh, finally managed to get something on the go for the Paint Comp over the weekend. A change is as good as a rest. So just to keep up the work: the painting comp entry, then more Orks afterwards.
My Hobby space is something of a pass-through room, just a place for the stairs up to my room. It’s pretty tight, but it’s got a cave-like quality with my painting desk tucked under the stairs that I enjoy. I am another proponent of the Organised Chaos Theory. There is a drawer jammed full of various-sized sandwich bags of bits and pieces in need of sorting, heaving under the weight of many unopened combat patrol magazine sets. It is the one place emitting discordia; everywhere else is perfectly managed chaos. I do, however, tend to find that a cleaning spree in the general area of my painting desk precedes an upturn in productivity.
