About the Project

So I mentioned on stream some time back that I'm playing 3rd Edition 40k with a friend and would like to boost my 24 Tyranid models from the "Battle For Macragge" box with some more cheap plastic to get to 750 points and see how they behave against Dark Eldar. And the community came through.

This Project is Active

Let's get juicy

Continuing on the quest that is “all dem bugs must gotten painted soon-ish” (that hurt, didn’t it?)  I mixed up some “Marine Juice”.

Not sure how that will go but… LEEEEEEEEEEROY JENKINS!

Stay tuned for results! Sometime… maybe.

FLOCK IT!

The initial plan for storage was one (1) 4l box from WarMag. Having all ‘nids sitting on the table it quickly shows: I need at least 1600cm² of space. One of the before mentioned boxes only has roughly 700cm².

So I need two (2) boxes.

Next: the tallest of the guys is the Hive Tyrant. Including the base he’s 104mm high. The 4l box is 68mm. FLOCK! So one 4l and one 9l XL then? The 9l XL has 180mm clearance but then I have two boxes for one army. FLOCK! But wait, WarMag also has the 9l XL Double Decker which is basically the same as the other 9l but has a tray that goes in between box and lid. And instead of costing 38EURO for two boxes it’s only 33EURO and it’s one (1) box. Nice. Lets double check the clearance:

‘Double Decker’ – Same as the 9 Litre XL Dimensions above, but the top section has approx. 75mm height of storage, and the bottom section has approx. 104mm height of storage.

“Approx. 104mm”???? This won’t fit. The XL has a total clearance of 180mm. Even if the try and both magnetic sheets are just 1mm thick it’ll be less than 104mm. BIG BOY WON’T FIT!

FLOCK!

So now what? Well, they are still only RUB and RUB sells other sizes. One size I already have is the 24.5l box. The inside dimensions are 530 x 350 x 130. It’s high enough and the footprint is 1855cm² so more than enough for all the ‘nids. The only thing missing is something magnetic inside. The box is currently 23 EURO on amazon and a 40 x 90 cm magnetic white board is 12 Euro so 35 EURO for one big 24.5l box.

It’s a bit more than the WarMag box but it also has more space. I think I will look into my already used 24.5l and see if I can vacate one of them and look at the local hardware store to see if they have some cheap sheet metal or something I could plonk in there.

With the magic of superglue and magnets the ‘nids now sit on the side of my PC case XD

Brought them back to check for flaws. Happy to report only the underside of the gargoyles needed some reworking. The almost horizontal wings made it difficult to get paint there in the big block.

All build and primed

It’s massive chunk of plastic and metal when put into one place.

Not sure if priming everything at once was such a good idea but it is done.

First bare metal and plastics, then primed black followed by a white zenithal. Final coat of skeleton bone.

Metals assemble!

One piece metals are a dream.

Multiple piece metals can be a nightmare XD

My fingers are covered in superglue but not stuck together. But they all went together in the end though the wings of the gargoyles really are… well, get yourself some and see what you get XD

Metals assemble!

The gargoyles are on their stands now and one of the guards is on his 40mm. The other one will be based once the order with the magnets and the base arrives XD

Next up: paint everything or maybe even do bases? Or should I keep black bases?

Final count

After tonight’s stream I finally build the Tyranids from the Battle for Macragge box. Took me only 22 years.

Final count for my ‘nid army is currently:

  • 28 Genestealers
  • 10 Spore Mines
  • 28 Termagants
  • 8 Gargoyles
  • 8 Hormagaunts
  • 2 Tyranid Guards
  • 3 Tyranid Warriors
  • 1 Hyve Tyrant
  • 1 Thornback Carnifex

According to the army builder site newrecruit that’s almost 1400 points in 3rd edition values.

Still need to reassemble the metal minis.

New tools arrived! Dental pics and Oyumaru (not pictured)

Tools!Tools!

With new tools more work can be done. Filled some gaps with milliput and tried my hand had recasting missing parts with #oyumaru and milliput. Hopefully I mixed it good enough so that it will cure fully. Because the first batch of mixed putty (that one used for the casting) I mixed directly. Not realising that the brown part had gone hard a bit. The second batch (used to fill the gaps) I first gave the individual components a good squeeze before I combined them. Came out much softer. Time will tell. If the casting does not cure I need to mix some more.
