Beware the Creeping Death
What's in the box? *Done in my best Brad Pitt voice*
Where do you start with something like this? Well I think with the contents of the Starter box is best. So what do you get well as you can see it’s a fair amount. There is a cloth mat, a learn to play booklet, some reference cards, 4 character miniatures, an objective marker, a corpse pile all 3D printed resin, 3 pieces of MDF terrain and a ladder, a couple of D6 and a measuring stick.
Lets start with the minis for the 4 different characters in the scenarios you get and that can be ported over to playing a full game. They are left in a cradle and you have to remove them from the supports. I think it’s to ensure they aren’t damaged in transport. Initially I thought it was a bit annoying but not long after I assembled a kit from another company that took me 3 times as long to do. Once they were out and I had to make a repair because I accidentally snipped the end off a spear. They are great sculpts, the details are crisp, they are full of character and I almost instantly had ideas for paint schemes for all of them. The aesthetic is post apocalyptic mediaeval which is new to me at least.
The MDF terrain is very nice but is not anything that is going to completely blow your mind. For it to be included is definitely a must for the game mechanics (see the project entry on the game & rules). It was super easy to put together and really doesn’t need any painting but you could add some colour if you wanted. The measuring ruler is also MDF and I decided to paint it up immediately.
The cloth mat is a really nice touch as well. It has some nice details on it and because of the way the play area is set up it makes it even easier to move forward with the game.
The booklet is nicely laid out and doesn’t assume you know wargaming. It walks you through several scenarios and lets you pick up the ideas and mechanics really easily. You even have more basic profile cards to begin with so you aren’t overloaded with rules.
All in all it really is a great starter that has everything you need for 2 players to make a start in the game. From here you each need one other character to have a fully fledged doom company or from the 8 other characters build an entirely different doom company. I’m not sure if I am just going to build on what I have in the box or to pick up some of the more strange minis like the Beekeeper to build something very 1490. If I had to give it a score I would give it 4 ominous ravens out of 5. The only reason it isn’t 5 is because while it’s pretty close to perfect it isn’t quite there, getting the minis out was a bit of a pain. Honestly though that’s me being really nit picky. It’s a really tight knit package for getting your foot in the door for the game. I also think if you are looking to build a community locally giving demos using the box is what it’s great for.

It should have been “who’s in the box” in the movie XD
