Happy Sunday ! From the Land down under!
Having seen (a few weeks ago) Lloyd give Justine and John hard times for their terrain layout, I would love to see Lloyd do a series of hobby labs where he takes a 4×4 or 3×3 piece of board and each fortnight take it to a finished gaming table, from planning with pen and paper through to weathering, buildings and the little touches that bring it to life. Each fortnight he could demonstrate the techniques used and then list the materials he will be using in the next episode so we can follow along. Much like Warrens journey into F.O.W or the current Bolt Action, we could all take the terrain journey together with Lloyd. Admittedly we could all end up with the same tables the world over ( I’m in Australia), but the techniques learned could be used for different sized tables. I know there is a hell of a lot of content there (snow terrain, dessertscapes, city scapes, forests and fields, star fields for X-Wing), but because it is such a long project scheduling would be taken care of for quite some time. Hobby Lab is great (one of my favourite parts of Backstage), but its a bit disjointed, one week telegraph poles another week asteroids. And Lloyd would be able to educate us all on the way terrain should be done. I would even love a ‘build some terrain’ boot camp at some point.
I hate to correct Justin (ok, who am I kidding? – I love correcting people :p) but aerial reconnaissance in the First World War was extremely useful and paid attention to by the top brass. Even in 1914 they spotted the German advance during ‘the race to the coast’, and by 1917 the had British refused the Pope’s proposal of an Easter Truce as it would interrupt photo-reconnaissance missions.
only major difference in the opening stages of the first world war was that whilst Germany and France had seen the potential of aerial reconnaissance (had had begun formulating the beginnings of what would become the respective airforces at a later time) the Brits in 1914 were relying on civilian flying clubs, painting everything green and supplying the pilots with elephant guns! War Office actually began requisitioning elephant guns from the private collections of aristocrats for the use of the Royal Flying Corps as we hadn’t really been developing our aerial capacity at that point. Good idea, but no-one really wanted to spend any serious money on it until the war broke out

Happy Sunday Folks. Wow y’all made me go and dig up my old Warhammer Quest, Hero quest, and Advance Hero Quest boxed sets full of dust but playable. the fun I had with these games as a kid/adult . Love the show thanks for the entertainment .

I knew nothing about Warhammer Quest, being as it appeared during my great wargaming hiatus, but seriously?!
Looking at that stuff makes me think that it was one of the greatest products that GW ever did. Dropping it does seem like the greatest travesty they’ve committed. Not revisiting it looks like the height of stupid business decisions, but I suppose that the company knows what it’s doing…
Here’s hoping that Mantic can produce something as good (or better) when Dungeon Saga arrives.
Having play tested Dungeon Saga in mantic towers yesterday I can say 100% it’s shaping up to be as good as WHQ ever was -I can’t wait to get the finished game now!
Now I know where I recognised the footsore style from Musketeer!
That by it self is saying that they will be of a quality

Happy Sunday! What a great show. Warren’s love for WQ shines through and I could not agree more. Owning and enjoying a copy of that box is about as near to pure hobby joy as you can get. For me it was Necromunda – purely for the ability to create a unique subterranean sci-fi wild west from the rich background, plethora of content and scenarios produced and the lovely range of minis. This period was the pinnacle of GW for me as a producer of the finest games and worlds – not just minis. Thanks for taking me back there Warren!
As for the Boot Camp I can assure you that we all can’t wait too and I’m so pleased you’re already looking to expand with more. I’ll be honoured to be attending the first of hopefully many to come.
Lastly what a lovely man Chez is (and a fellow Cornishman to boot). Footsore’s stuff look great and I will definitely be investing in some of their Arthurian range in the near future. As for rulesets, fantastic as SAGA is (and it is rightly lauded) I can also heartily recommend Too Fat Lardies Dux Brittaniarum from all I’ve seen of it. This is specifically post-roman in theme and setting with a fantastic narrative structure as players and their armies (with named characters complete with personality traits etc) battle over any one of a range of historical kingdoms in a wide range of scenarios that affect an ongoing campaign. Again it’s on a small skirmish scale ala SAGA, but forces and personalities develop with the ebb and flow of battles and these outcomes effect continued play. Would be great to hear from them on BoW too.
Right, I’ve ruminated enough. Now I’m off to sit staring wistfully out a window remembering glorious days spent battling in the Underhive with Dookie on in the background….

I agree Warren, GW should do another Warhammer Quest, with a massive box full of goodies and all the rules.
Being able to use the miniatures for warhammer wargaming, rpg and warhammer quest would be a clever move

Happy Sunday. .. really good show. I now also feel old… As @warzan said that War hammer Quest was a way into the war hammer world. My introduction was through Warhammer Fantasy Role play. Same principle but all dice and sheets, no mini’s.
Nice to see the VBCW mentioned in the miniatures, I have actually used Bolt Action to play VBCW just to tie together two topics. I will say though for me the thing that got me into VBCW was the total tongue in cheek aspect about it. Knowing one of the guys that came up with the concept helped as well.
it’s a great idea VBCW, and has a great cult-like following. who knows, maybe BoW could do maybe a one-off piece on it once the Bolt Action coverage has gone out?
Great show, kinda makes me want to crack out my warhammer quest – Although I have to say I preferred advanced heroquest – D12 system worked better for me. Although master of puppets is going on now.
Great to see Ches on the show and justifiably mocking nickelback. Really nice range of minis – love the skrealings – does anyone know which book contains their battleboard for saga?
Warhammer Quest was my favourite of GW’s many Specialist games back in the day, and it’s frequently the game i play with my old university crew when we meet up. Hell, if nothing else the variety of expansion Hero packs could just change the whole game: Warrior Priests, Nobles, questing Knights, Slayers, Wardancers, Rangers, Chaos Warriors, Pit Fighters & Witch Hunters, they all brought something unique to the table with their own unique character booklets that gave them a whole new set of options for the roleplaying element of the game.
I always thought though that Quest would be a great “Prestige” product ala the more recent Space Hulk: Glossy production and cram it full of GW’s (actually quite nice) push-fit minis for the monsters.
Unfortunatley this is unlikely as I heard tell that part of the reason GW discontinued support for the game (so much sooner than the likes of Necromunda, Mordheim & Blood Bowl) was that during the move to their current offices the files with the artwork on were lost, so they would have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch and just decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Sad really….

Great show, any views on the current Steam game of Warhammer Quest?. I like it as you can do a quick dungeon crawl to use up a spare 10 minutes or so.
I’ve recently ordered some of the Footsore Irish to start a Dux Bellorum faction (i’m probably going to base them in a way so I can play other games as well with them). They have not arrived yet (probably due to Ches being in Northern Ireland). Fairly excited to see them. I’ll probably be using their early and late Saxon range as well for Dux Bellorum and perhaps some Lion Rampart 1066 fun!
A hobby lab on roads would be good. I’m sort of stuck on a cheap convenient way to do it.

Re: Bolt Action boot camp, could you let us know the proposed dates, so that some of us can book the time off work?
Warhammer Quest! That takes me back! As a teenager I played so much of this with one of my best friends, controlling 2 heroes each. Inspired by my skaven collection and Bill King short stories, I made a huge sewer system series of boards for the game.
I agree it’s crazy that GW didn’t / don’t rerelease the game. A modern version with new plastic miniatures would be amazing. You could have a variety of heroes (and new hero packs would be a good money-spinner. The monsters in the box could be mainly the animal gribblies: bats, rats, spiders, etc. Giving you an incentive to get the ‘army’ type models from GW to expand your options. (There would have to be some in the box of course, to get you started.)
Themed expansions could bring out new enemy characters designed to complement warhammer army troops. e.g. You could have a ‘journey into the chaos wastes’ supplement with mutants, chaos marauder chieftans and shamans, etc. It could even have rules for playing as a band of Chaos worshippers. (Then the orc and goblin supplement could have rules for playing as Orcs, etc.)
And imagine the possibilities with plastic dungeon terrain!

On the subject of Romano-British, fantasy-ish ‘gaming in the gaps’ so to speak, anyone ever read Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord trilogy? Follows a young Saxon boy called Derfel (who later becomes the venerated Saint Derfel in Medieval Welsh lore) who’s adopted by Merlin, is brought up as a Brit and becomes one of Arthur’s lieutenants. British kingdoms still kicking the crap out of each other, all the while it’s distracting them from dealing with the constant waves of Saxon migrants landing on the east coast. Arthur and his companions trying to forge an alliance against the coming onslaught 🙂 good read!
Yeah loved that series and have always wanted to try and recreate the characters in an army. If I remember right, gripping beast even do a set of “wolf tail warriors” that seem to be based on the description of Derfels’ own warriors.
That’s a reminder. I’ve read two out of three. I’ve another book to buy.
@dignity, two Australian WW1 movies you should see are “The Light Horsemen” & “Gallipoli”. We are starting to get a fair bit put on over the next 18months as its the centenary of Gallipoli and the ANZAC legend.
I agree about Warhammer Quest although I never got to play it myself, It came out just before I went to University, and as you can guess my bank balance did not allow for such luxuries for some time after that.
Unfortunately it being dropped speaks volumes about GW attitude. Warren you look at the set and see this great value box set as a gateway to more Warhammer stuff for people. GW will look at it and worry about people trying to use the figures from it for Warhammer rather than buying the Warhammer range, or people questioning if you can produce 80 odd decent looking plastic minis for this price, why do you expect me to pay treble that for the same number in metal (as was the situation back in the late 90’s).

Good morning, guys! Another great show!
Actually, cavalry was very heavily used in WW2 on the Eastern Front. The Soviets regularly employed whole cavalry corps that were very effective. The Waffen SS even had at least one whole cavalry division, and lots of German infantry and Grenadier divisions had cavalry detachments for reconnaissance, etc.
Granted, this was when the front lines were far to the east, however, when the sheer size of the battle front made the line relatively porous and cavalry detachments could get behind enemy lines without actually “charging the trenches.” When the Soviets pushed back to the west, into Poland, the Balkans, and finally Germany, the overall battlefront narrows, and even the Soviets stopped using cavalry by this point.

Oh, and @lloyd , I have made myself some hedgerows like you showed on Hobbylab and they look amazing (even in 15mm). 1,000 thanks for this great tip, in just an hour or so the quality of my tables have at least doubled.
@oriskany despite the myth of mechanization a lot of German units also used cavalry for supplying and transporting troops.
I think the German artillery kept many to moving with horses?
Oh, absolutely @yavasa and @zorg . The Germans went into Russia with something like 270,000 horses for transport and logistical support (as opposed to actual “cavalry”). Sadly, almost every one of those horses died in the first winter. Another 250,000 were brought in for the Case Blue offensive in 42, and almost all of them were worked or frozen to death (or eaten) in the “Stalingrad Winter,” repeat for 43, repeat for 44 . . . The Wehrmacht was remarkably UN-mechanized, despite their reputation to the contrary.
Additionally, I think what the guys were talking about were actual *cavalry* units, which are horse-mounted *combat* formations used for screening, recon, raiding, and interdiction of supply lines deep in an enemy’s operational rear.
The Soviets were particularly good at this with whole corps of cavalry that could operate behind German lines for months at a time because . . . hey . . . horses don’t need oil, diesel, or gas. As long as there’s grass on the ground and crops in the fields, that unit can operate behind enemy lines using captured arms and munitions almost indefinitely.
yes the polish cavalry attacking tanks is a popular story probably with some truth in it.

I love the sculpts by Bill, and have quite a few, especially from the Dark Age and Very British Civil War ranges. @lloyd I would recommend taking a look at VBCW, it’s a fun alternative to playing WW2 plus it’s very community driven. I was lucky enough to be asked to write the background for Cornwall ( Kernow) and Singapore, because there was an empire still at the period the game is set you can play in other parts of the world. I use Bolt Action to play VBCW but you can use any rules you want.

So there is this game called Hero quest 25th coming out, does anyone know or ever heard of this. I would hate to spend 135 american on a hoax
It’s a real game by a Spanish company called Gamezone. There were some US trademark issues that got it kicked off KS, I don’t know how that’ll affect retail distribution in the US.
@lludan or @Iludan I’ve backed it. It’s been delayed a fair bit, but their latest update suggests they’re nearly there. As a lof of the communications are in Spanish it’s not been terribly easy to keep up with what’s happening – or to know whether or not I’m keeping up with what’s happening! But the company seem pretty well established, so fingers crossed…
Happy Sunday guys! After running a WHQ campaign with some mates for a year after digging our old sets out I can wholeheartedly agree that it was a perfect game. The fact you could play it one off (at any level of creature and hero) with no GM or run it as a long campaign was really clever. Also it was great for mates to combine their collections to try different npc beasties.
It was the biggest mistake that GW made to abandon their ‘Specialist Games’ (WHQ, Bloodboowl, Mordheim, Necromunda etc) as these were arguably perfect games engines and just needed regular releases and content updates.
I agree with Warren that a re release of WHQ could revamp Warhammer fantasy beautifully. The game allows you to own random miniatures and use them within the game. The monsters table is currently all bad guys with good guys (and a chaos warrior) being the heroes. I think WHQ 2015 could be options to play as anti-heroes (Dark Elf assassin, Necromancer, Ogre etc) and take on dungeons filled with humans and dwarves 🙂 Finally cover all the races stat-wise.
Great game. If you have a mate with a set get a gathering together one Saturday and enjoy.
Wow, the Warhammer Quest game. I remember seeing it as a kid in the 90s in one of the shops here in Szczecin. Fell in love with it. It was a genuine box packed… packed with tons of awesome stuff. Thanks @warzan You bring back memories. Old Warhammer used to be so cool. I’m not saying it is bad now but oh well old school is the best. As @dignity said it it cartoony. Now, I am really afraid of the End Times. If the new stuff is going to be skirmish based let’s revive Mordheim.

This is a great post, @yavasa . I’ve always heard this was a myth, an exaggeration that was repeated too often as a colorful way of describing the technological gap between the German and Polish armies in 1939. Of course we’ve all heard the “History Channel” version, but in more than one book by pretty serious historians the story has been debunked. I never knew the exact details though, until your link above. As with too many myths, it seems to have an infinitesimal sand-grain of truth at its core, but has been taken out of context and exaggerated to the point of fantasy.

Yes propaganda the invisible arm of war can bolster a flagging army weaken an enemy’s position and be a better division than fortified defences.
nice post @yavasa the post I found also states how common horses were through WWII even with mechanized army’s as @oriskany says less consumables required plus edible in emergencies definitely taster than a tank?
if the story’s about hoarse being in the meat in the UK were true they were (tasty) the pies definitely don’t taste as good now as they did before the stories came out?

great show guys, Warhammer Quest & a 40K version would help GW immensely now twice the use of your figures for the price of a rule book? that dragon head standard thing was one of the Scottish Celt super weapons against the Romans as when the wind blows through the head the head would make a noise similar to the screamer of the stuka dive-bomber’s.

Warren I couldn’t agree more about Warhammer Quest. It is an amazing game and I still have my copy sitting in my closet. The Roleplay book made the game exceptional. I’m excited to check out the Beyond the Grey Mountains site. I would agree that’s it one of the top games GW ever came out with.

Playing catch up this week having been at the HH Weekender and missed this – Warhammer Quest! I was gutted back in the 90s when it was dropped as I loved it!
Warren hit the nail on the head with the fact that this could have been the game to relaunch fantasy and get people buying everything. I still have my copy and dust it off occasionally to add some new minis – added some black orcs last time round. Would I have bought them for any other reason? No. Why did I add them? Because their in the bestiary section of the Roleplay book and offer a new unit to paint and play against – what more could GW marketing ask for?!
Bring it back please GW, then people might start to like you a bit more 😉
