“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!”

A bit of a delay but January’s monster is now finished. I kept the 120mm oval base and mounted the Jabberslythe as if he was clambering up the rockface. The rocks come from garden decorative slates and polyfilla was used to fill in the gaps and create a rougher surface for the open space on the base. The rocks were painted black and highlighted and washed with Drachenhof Nightshade and Thraka Green.

The open space on the base became a water pool using Baharroth Blue, Lothern Blue, Scorched Brown, White Scar, Drachenhof Nightshade and three coats of ‘Ardcoat to give a glossy shine.

The knight with the vorpal sword is from Citadel Minuatures Oldhammer F4 Paladin Sir Errol de Swash but I wanted to choose a character that was a close resemblance to Michael Palin who played Dennis Cooper, the reluctant hero in Terry Gilliam’s Film Jabberwocky.

So, finally I’ve got him built. Paid work gets in the way of hobby progress as usual. Despite the great detail of the parts and my careful preparation, they didn’t join very well. Therefore, I had to use some greenstuff to fill in the significant gaps on his back. Anyhow, I’ve gather a good load of slate and so will now build up the base to create height and merge the resin base into something more swamp-like.

The kit is a really detailed resin model in 17 parts. I’m pretty impressed with the fine detail. I may have to think about what to do about the inside of the treetrunk on the base, as it is rather too smooth. On the negative side, there is a lot of flash to carefully remove. None of the pieces look warped, which can be the case with FW tanks (see my Savlar Chem Dogs Armoured Division in another BoW/OTT project)… so overall I’m looking forward to the construction. I will be using superglue, and as this is a resin rather than metal kit, I don’t think any parts will need pinning… but I will face that hurdle if I need to ?

So, over the Festive Period I watched for the umpteenth time Terry Gilliam’s Jabberwocky. I appreciate that this film is not to everyone’s taste, but it got me thinking about introducing a monster based Warcry war band led by a beastmaster. To keep with the usual GW restrictions of only using Citadel or Forge World Miniatures (just in case this ends up being an Army on Parade), I’ve plumped for the Jabberslythe to in effect become the Jabberwocky. I’ve also got a cockatrice, some skin wolves and a Merwyrm, all or some of which may appear in the final war band. I was contemplating a Forge World Magma Dragon, but discovered that FW appear to be retiring the AoS fantasy models which is a real shame because I don’t really want to pay x3 or x4 times the original price via eBay! Anyhow, this is the start…
