Forged In Battle Preview Turning Their Hand To Digital Sculpting

Andy Cooper of Forged in Battle has been having some fun recently getting back to sculpting. Old eyes mean that coming at it from the traditional hand-sculpting angle was pretty tough but they have been tinkering with digital sculpting and I thought I'd show off some of the results.

Andy hadn't been sculpting for various reasons but thought it was about time to get back to it, working hard on 15mm and 18mm figures for the Forged in Battle range. Digital sculpting was allowing Andy to get a better look at the tiny miniatures than before and so he set about learning to use a completely different set of tools and to understand a new way of sculpting.

I think you can tell that Andy still has the skills, especially when you see something as complicated as the Landsknecht Officer above with all of those folds in their clothing.

Another of the focal points seems to have been a shift towards the American Civil War. It has been really fascinating seeing Andy's journey back into sculpting on Facebook, especially when the journey doesn't just cover the successes but also some of the failures and learning moments.

As well as tinkering around with the sculpting of miniatures digitally, Andy has also been looking at 3D printing and using this as a challenge for his sculpts. Will they make it through the process of printing and if not, what needs to be changed in order to achieve that? As I said, it's been nice seeing someone working through the learning process, especially on such a mixture of different Historical miniatures from a variety of periods.

One thing that Andy has been wondering about is chainmail! I can't imagine it would be fun sculpting each of the rings one by one. There is probably a good hack for that and if someone knows it, maybe share it with Forged in Battle over on the Facebook page.

What's neat is that it seems like what's coming down the pipeline from Forged in Battle is going to cover a mixture of scales. As well as fitting in around that 15mm to 18mm mark, the idea is that some of these could also end up as great 28mm miniatures as well.
