I thought it was eXtra Large Bovine excrementS ?
@zoidpinhead may I suggest Ogres ? they’re big boys so you don’t have to paint as many figures.
I could suggest the herd and whatever that wilt daddy thing is that Gerry mentioned on the XLBS …. but I’m not sure that is a good choice if you want to survive your trip to the OTT HQ 😉I’d suggest picking a faction that gives you good vibes. I’m not sure if there is a difficulty rating for factions.
It would be nice if there was one, because then you could factor that in.July 5, 2026 at 6:45 pm #1979021July 5, 2026 at 11:32 pm #1979036Thanks for the advice on choosing a Kings of War faction. As a last resort I can dig out a D20 @sundancer I’m certainly going to go with the one that feels right to me. @limburger Ogres are a solid shout for a beginner for sure. As you say the low model count and straightforward, smash mouth play style definitely have an appeal. I’m much more likely to be far less sensible though and pick something that means I’ll need to do a lot of painting in less time than is either reasonable or feasible 😀
July 6, 2026 at 5:39 am #1979037A shame that there are so little game with “surprise units”. Dreamscape Collision has (because it’s a game about dreams) a card called “guest from another world” and you can use any 25/20mm based mini for it. And you have 3 profiles to choose from. High attack, high defence or very fast. So you can literally counter the creatures that are on the table.
Oh and it’s moanday again XD
July 6, 2026 at 7:07 am #1979038I suspect a lot of English people are very tired and hungover today.
I did not stop up that late.
July 6, 2026 at 6:38 pm #1979103@zoidpinhead I think someone should do an article series about that choice … maybe they’ve already written one ? 😉
(and if we as gamers ever made sane choices GW wouldn’t have become as big as they are 😀 )
July 6, 2026 at 7:32 pm #1979120maybe they’ve already written one ?
@limburger let’s say they are certainly working on it 🙂 Not an easy choice with so much to go at and with a relatively well balanced system there isn’t even a prevailing meta that has to be followed.
I can see the appeal of GW and their products and certainly don’t begrudge them anything. The hobby is where it is because of them for good or ill. As an example of how crazy things are in the GW collecting world at the moment I sold some empty boxes from my Dogs of War project for more than I paid for 1,000 points worth of painted Mantic Ogres. They are quite nicely painted too 😀
July 6, 2026 at 11:58 pm #1979133@zoidpinhead – the collecting part of GW is truly insane. When I sold my collection off circa 2011, I thought I was doing well. Prices are now just obscene. Yeah, even EMPTY BOXES are a thing!!! But if they are Dogs of War, those are indeed rare, as that army (I had a full collection of it back when it came out!), was short lived.
July 7, 2026 at 6:29 am #1979134Empty boxes had been a thing for 25+ years. Especially those with styropor inlays. Silly money in parts.
I still have some of those. Maybe I should sell them off XD
July 7, 2026 at 11:35 am #1979182@zoidpinhead I’ve managed to catch sight of some Dogs of War assembled and arranged in units but the paint job made me lament what the owner had done. Even with a 90s paint style it was bad. Sometimes old minis need the rescue in order to give them the spark of life and interest that keeps people looking at them.
@grantinvanman I must confess trying to hunt down old plastic armored Empire horses before the re-release and that was a nightmare I didn’t pull the trigger on. I’m glad as the figures popped back again and I can just get some bits I need.
@sundancer Money from that which no longer gives you joy is good. If nothing else it can fund your next project or throw it at your 1:1 home build
July 7, 2026 at 4:00 pm #1979261People buy empty boxes? That’s just weird. That’s like buying a pizza and selling the empty box afterwards.
July 7, 2026 at 5:06 pm #1979266There’s this James May Toy Stories (sp?) episode where he buys a model train at an auction.
The first thing he does after paying is to rip it out of the box it came in …
I bet a lot of fanatical model train collectors had a slight heart attack 😀I can understand wanting the art work that is on some of the pretty boxes out there, but surely there must be other ways to acquire those.
I know one day I will get me something by Larry Elmore (classic D&D art) or Boris Vallejo (Conan … of course).
There’s a few posters from the Things from the Flood artist (https://www.simonstalenhag.se/ ).
I doubt I could afford an original, so a copy will do just fine (as long as the living artist gets his fair share).
(I really wish hiring an interior designer was something not limited to the ultra rich … because I discovered that filling a house with furniture and have it look somewhat decent is one heck of a challenge.)//
@zoidpinhead you could do an article on every faction … and then pick the one you like best afterwards. 😀
It’s not like you will only ever buy one army for KoW, is it ? 😉July 8, 2026 at 8:24 am #1979313July 8, 2026 at 9:22 am #1979320you could do an article on every faction … and then pick the one you like best afterwards.
@limburger I can ask the managing editor. I understand he is a bit of a secret Kings of War fan too 😉
It’s not like you will only ever buy one army for KoW, is it ?
Who only buys one army for a game system? That’s just odd 😀 There will definitely be more than one. I probably won’t do all 20 factions straight away but the options in KoW are very attractive.
