About the Project

I will be running a short campaign for the new Planet of the Apes roleplaying game from Magnetic Press. I'm an enthusiastic fan of the franchise so I backed the crowdfunding campaign nearly whole-hog, which included some surprisingly nice looking miniatures that I didn't give myself nearly enough time to paint...

We’re five sessions in and everyone seems to be enjoying the game. However, I am finding that the miniatures, nice as they are, just aren’t all that useful in the game. The combat system is pretty loose and doesn’t really need maps or miniatures — at best they’re visual aids and at worst they’re table decorations that obstruct access to the ridiculous array of snacks my players usually bring.

It could be that in this case, Gerry’s right and miniatures aren’t needed in a roleplaying game. But I’m looking at these models and the lovely hex maps that came in the box set, and I’m thinking there might be a simple skirmish game that could be cobbled together with this stuff…

Farewell to the Planet of the Apes (for now, anyway)

We finished our Planet of the Apes RPG campaign last night. For the grand finale I came up with an excuse to get most of the miniatures on the table, but my players have collectively shown a remarkable talent for avoiding combat. Still, it at least served as a nice illustration of the number of gorilla soldiers they had to sneak past to get aboard their crashed spaceship, and later on we used them to help visualize what part of the ship each character was in. It was an epic finish and I think everyone in the group enjoyed it.

I’m still interested in seeing if I can come up with a simple skirmish game using the game’s provided miniatures and hex maps, but I also have a lot of other projects going at the moment so that’s going on the back burner for now. I think we’ll call this project complete!
