Mumak & Mumak – a Middle Earth plog

With them primed, I’ve been adding in colours. Contrast over the zenith primers does a lot of heavy lifting on the greys, browns and reds. But my gosh these are fiddly!

This is the second Mumak also finished and ready for priming. This one is the standard build, and again I’ve rigged the Howdah, and added tusks weapons. I’ve also flipped the base round so that they don’t have identical looking casualties in the same places.

With all the sculpting done, I’ve also added rigging to the platform to be more like the way they are in the film. I’ve also used string and cocktail sticks to make some tusk weapons.

I’m not very good at green stuff sculpting, but I’m trying to match the texture as much as possible from the existing model. It’s not too bad, and I’m hopeful that the paint job will cover a multitude of sins!

I had to cut the trunk into a number of pieces so I could get it to make the right shape. There’s a paper clip running through to give it all strength as I build out the gaps.

I’ve got a Mumak in box that’s not assembled, but I also couldn’t resist picking this assembled and part-painted Mumak up on eBay for cheap.

The Mumak kit is annoyingly monopose for such a big miniature, so this model will get cut up and altered into a different pose.

On arrival, the first thing I did was carefully prise off its head, and slice off the trunk. I’m not going to do anything with the legs, but let’s see how different t we can make this feel with a change to head position and pose.

And with those, that’s the starter box (and a bit more) complete.

I now absolutely adore the MESBG miniatures range, and it’s gotten me over my fear of painting entire armies.

Next to do – Mumaks!

Again, no work in progress on this one. Contrast, drybrushing and a little drybrushed lighting from the sword go a long way.

No work in progress images of this one sadly, but a nice simple paint job brings him to life. The base is the dark gravel again, with some tufts that have been darkened with contrast.
