About the Project

This is a project I've been wanting to do for a long time and a recent month long hospital stay got me to pull the trigger. I haven't got any one rule set in mind, Force on Force and Chain of Command are both likely candidates but that's the beauty of Historical wargaming, you can always just pick a different ruleset.

I want to start this project off with the Communist Guerillas. These can be used as either ZIPRA or ZANLA, the two Guerilla armies fighting against the Government. ZIPRA was a part of ZAPU lead by Joshua Nkomo and backed by the Soviet Union, their support mostly came from the minority African tribes. One thing you notice pretty quickly is that the different types of Communists are divided by ethnic allegiance which also influenced their areas of operation and size.

ZANLA was the military wing of ZANU lead by Robert Mugabe. They were mostly the majority African tribe in the area, Shona and backed by the Chinese Communists.

Both sides used similar kit supplied by their Communist backers including uniforms and weapons. The AK-47 was common as was the SKS and like in Vietnam old stocks of PPSH-41’s were also sent.

Because of this I won’t be painting one or the other but generic Guerillas which can be used as either or as similar groups in other parts of Africa. The Rhodesian’s had many names for these groups the most common of which was “Terr” short for Terrorist, the influx of American and Australian’s with Vietnam service brought some other nicknames but I won’t use them here because they’re not the nicest even if they don’t make much sense in Africa.

24 Guerillas with AK-47's. The miniatures are all from Eureka Miniatures here in Australia and a mix of bare heads, caps and berets. 24 Guerillas with AK-47's. The miniatures are all from Eureka Miniatures here in Australia and a mix of bare heads, caps and berets.
8 Men with SKS's and 8 with PPSH-41's. The Rhodesians talk a lot about finding stockpiles and 8 Men with SKS's and 8 with PPSH-41's. The Rhodesians talk a lot about finding stockpiles and "Terrs" armed with the SKS especially the less trained Guerillas.
The quality on these are really nice and the minis aren't too cluttered. The quality on these are really nice and the minis aren't too cluttered.
If I expand this force in the future it will be with more of these guys with the SKSIf I expand this force in the future it will be with more of these guys with the SKS
A few RPG-2's, the first mass produced RPG which eventually became the RPG-7 that we are most familiar with. Also six men with RPD LMG's and Two Leaders. As you can see with the older gear ranging from WWII vintage to early Cold War gear the Bush War saw a lot of surplus Communist weapons shipped over just like we see in Vietnam. I’m excited to get these guys finished as I recover from some minor surgery. Despite being Guerillas they are mostly wearing Browns and Greens in different shades which should give the force a nice unified but not uniformed effect.
