About the Project

Slow progress painting through the 40k Dark Imperium deathguard minis. I put off getting into 40k for years. The game seemed too expensive, the rules bloated and the local community not terribly inviting. After a few years of mainly hobbying and playing games with my son I joined a gaming group. (Isleworth Gaming Club) After several months of playing Saga, The Walking Dead, Bolt Action and other games from my collection I was invited along to Warhammerfest, just as 8th edition dropped. I finally pulled the trigger and bought Dark Imperium. I was very lucky in that my fellow club members encouraged my interest, gave me hints & tips and even gave me some free miniatures. Even to the extent that "Dan G" gave me his entire deathguard half of his Dark Imperium boxset with the proviso that I painted and played with them, not ebay them. :-) So the project was begun and have added a Rhino and a few more Plague marines to get upto 2000pts with some options.

I already have a lot of Poxwalkers, but again I tripped over a sprue to complete my 100 pledge and gory zombie type models are always fairly fast to paint.I already have a lot of Poxwalkers, but again I tripped over a sprue to complete my 100 pledge and gory zombie type models are always fairly fast to paint.

I was scrambling for options for my 100 pledge and found a fun sprue. These were the champion and couple of marines that came out just after the Dark Imperium box. Adding variety whilst people were still hungry for more options.I was scrambling for options for my 100 pledge and found a fun sprue. It has inspired me to get back into my Deathguard force and try to get everything built and painted so I know what I can afford to move on to a new home and what I can use to play games with friends. It has inspired me to get back into my Deathguard force and try to get everything built and painted so I know what I can afford to move on to a new home and what I can use to play games with friends.

I made 14 Plaguebearers. Mostly from a proper box picked up cheaply and a few from a bits box I was gifted a while ago.I made 14 Plaguebearers. Mostly from a proper box picked up cheaply and a few from a bits box I was gifted a while ago.

A friend suggested these after playing a game at their house with some of there's. I may revisit and make more Nurgley.A friend suggested these after playing a game at their house with some of there's. I may revisit and make more Nurgley.

There's a couple of wardogs in the box and three variants. There's a couple of wardogs in the box and three variants.
A huge flamer and a huge A huge flamer and a huge "mini gun" made for a cool start.
The big claw hand on the second variant is really fun. I could definitely go more Nurgley on this one, but was rushing it as part of a 100 mini pledge with a deadline. The big claw hand on the second variant is really fun. Turned out well. Apothecary white contrast white robs got heavily weathered with browns and blood spatter and then unified with an Agrax Earthshade wash.Turned out well. I had two Lord of Contagions because I had two Death Guard Dark Imperium sets to work with. So converting one to be a Typhus mini made sense to me. I didn't like the latest sculpt of the GW Typhus, so a conversion with a bit of sprue suited me fine. I had two Lord of Contagions because I had two Death Guard Dark Imperium sets to work with. Maybe the scythe should be more dramatic, but I can always go back and make it more dramatic later if I fall in love with the game. Only really playing because it gets me interacting with great people again with a popular game most people can play and get hold of. I will take better pictures. I had some fun with some small Mantic minis as nurgling proxies on the base. One showing his butt seemed fun. I will take better pictures. I had some fun with some small Mantic minis as nurgling proxies on the base. One showing his butt seemed fun.
I have added some big flies since taking these pics, because I remember that part of his shtick is being able to summon swarms of pestilence and though his has the pipework on his back to produce them I wanted more nods towards this on the mini.I have added some big flies since taking these pics, because I remember that part of his shtick is being able to summon swarms of pestilence and though his has the pipework on his back to produce them I wanted more nods towards this on the mini.

My friends at the Isleworth Wargaming Club (destroyed as a weekly event since Covid and venue issues) are finding a way to get us back playing again. A 40K 500pts starter league, building hopefully up to fuller games of 40K.

I hate list building. But the “New Recruit” website made it relatively painless to get started. I may be a boring opponent for some because I am unsure how deeply I am willing to delve into clever stratagems and special rules to get the best out of my minis.
