Is anyone else a bit sad that WarGames llustrated is being taken over. I am not a regular buyer but do like getting the occasional issue for 5.99 with a free sprue. Can’t help but feel the price will be the first change

I don’t know. Given they’ve been taken over by Wyld Holdings, and seeing how influential Wyld is becoming in the tabletop industry, I’d be inclined to view this as a positive. They already have businesses and brands in their group including Wayland Games, Warcradle Studios, OnTableTop, Occam Distribution, Kraken Wargames and Battle Foam, covering retail, game and miniature production, distribution, online media and hobby accessories. They clearly have considerable infrastructure and reach within the industry, which could potentially give Wargames Illustrated more resources and a much wider audience.

A company usually doesn’t get bought because of “I want to have that”. Most of the times it’s a financial decision or the old owners retire. So some things will change for sure. Just look at the article from earlier:

The partnership empowers Wargames Illustrated’s editorial integrity whilst leveraging Wyld’s commercial infrastructure to scale. This also synergises with OnTableTop’s media network […] With the acquisition finalised, backend integration is already underway to enhance service delivery for subscribers worldwide.

This sounds to me like there will be some Intranet merging all the companies to have one giant resource. If that is a positive or a negative only time can tell.

I never read WI much. At one point I was tempted to get a subscription but here in Germany you can get only a subscription without the occasional sprue. (Shipping and packing and customs reasons I guess). There are shops selling individual copies with sprue but those are far and wide and would mean you’d pay a premium in shipping. So I ditched the whole thing. [Plus the whole magazine seems to be focused on historicals and that is not my jam]

So am I sad? No. Am I happy? Also no because every corporate takeover over the last 10 years has meant: price go up, service go down, staff gets laid off. Any one of those or a combination of all. But that’s all complaining about spoiled milk. The contracts are signed are we just have to wait what comes of it. Let’s hope for the best.

I last bought a copy of WI about by subscription … 10 years ago. The GW guy who was the editor (forget his name, Kiwi?), did a great job. Right when Warlord Games was busting out, GW was receding a bit, all the old classic GW people were doing cool independent stuff.

Maybe the odd one in between if there was a cool sprue in it since then.

Is this better? Maybe if you’re in the UK. Can’t see it as a positive for Canada. More cost as @sundancer points – and it’s already obscenely expensive; Lyle Lowery as editor? He was dull AF as White Dwarf editor from what I’ve seen. Sorry, Lyle – you were…

Overall? Hard pass. Just cancel the physical copy. Dead as a parrot pining for the fjörds.

Here in the UK the selling price is the standout. I don’t know of any magazine you can buy for 5.99 let alone one with a sprue. I think historical make good reading for a magazine. It’s something that can be understood in a few pages. As for selling ‘abroad’. Magazines sold out their region will always be expensive

Counter argument: the G’Wullu magazines with minis in them where sold world wide for the same price. But those where managed by a third party.

So far .. nothing that bad has happened to OTT since they were acquired by the same company, but they didn’t have anything that could be combined either.

With WI in the pocket I do wonder if they will ever be tempted to try to combine both.

    Hmm…

Osprey Games is sold off.  Now Wargames Illustrated.  Is Osprey or its parent company, Bloomsbury Publishing, in difficulty?  I also notice that Bloomsbury has put Who’s Who and similar up for sale   Of course the corporate speak will be some twaddle about streamlining making Osprey/Bloomsbury stronger for the future. Still…

‘in trouble’ or ‘not making as much money as the corporate overlords would like’ …
All we as consumers can do is hope that there will not be any additional enshitification of the end product and that the employees doing the real work get rewarded.

    Is that a Micro$oft advertisement ?

Those GW mags. If its the ones with a mini you often have to buy two issues to get a single model so if you are not subscribed you run the risk of only getting half a model

As for White Dwarf I buy it once a year as a stocking filler and yes I get a secret read but its close to the price of a Black Library paperback.

Wargames Illustrated was 5.99 and sometimes has a sprue. I want it to stay the same. There has to be an advantage of living in the UK and if WI is it please don’t take it away

No, they where actually good value for money. One week three minis, next week two paints and a brush, then three mins from a different faction, terrain. They where made by Hachet if I remember correctly.

Still out at the moment Spearhead this week has half  a team of Chaos Marauders. 9.99 sterling. Once it is much over a fiver it is outside my pocket money allowance. Saving for heating oil this winter
