So William De Warenne has his banner bearer but also needs a musician as well as some sort of religious support. Using the Wargames Atlantic Command box, I’ve put together a ‘trumpeter’ and a priest.

One thing I’ve learnt with painting the knights is that the surcoat and shield really sets the model off. Get these looking pretty good and you should get a good result. I’ve therefore spent time on these two elements. To get the green surcoat, I’ve used a mid green base and then mixed up a series of layer colours starting with a dark green applied to the shadow areas and then lightening the green in each layer to apply to the raised areas. The same with the red (but obviously using red rather than green!).

The rest of the models were painted the same way. Red leather for the strapping which was given a strong tone wash. Gunmetal for the armour and then a very heavy nuln oil wash. I’ve picked out the highlight areas with polished metal after. The skin was a pale skin base with a skin wash over the top. The shield was a transfer.

Through spending the time on the surcoat, the rest of the model is kept simple and quick. I can paint 2-3 surcoats in an hour but after that I can probably paint the armour/belts/rest of the model for 5 or 6 knights in an hour (not including the drying time for the washes.

And before anyone asks, yes I did carve out the trumpet, otherwise how will the trumpeter create any noise?

So here’s William de Warenne’s full command unit.
