Sharpe’s Rifles

As is becoming usual for this project, the smaller 28mm tabletop figure follows the 54mm display figure.

I really liked the pose they sculpted Harris in, with a stalking stance as he Scouts ahead.

Rifleman Harris was the third release in this range. I probably enjoyed painting this one the most of the larger figures, although I’m not sure why. It might be that the figure has a bit more gear equipped, or that I’m getting a bit more comfortable with the 54mm scale. Regardless of the reasons, I really enjoyed my time painting this one.

I’m also appreciating the staggered releases of these figures by Wargames Atlantic, as it allows me a chance to tackle each one before the next is released.

I’ve read that Hagman is next, with the sculpt basically getting final approval, and he’ll be followed by Teresa and then Perkins.

Here’s the 28mm Harper painted up for the table, playing with a forced perspective by putting some 15mm figures in the background. Another nice model, interesting posing compared to just ‘action’ skirmishing stances.

After getting the base coats on, I finished up Harper the next day. Whilst I am still learning the best ways to paint the larger scale figure, I’m pretty happy with the end result. I think this figure captures the likeness of Daragh O’Malley very well, and I hope that the paint job does him justice.

After a brief pause to wait for more figures to be released, Harper is now on my painting table. Very much still at the ugly stage with just the base colours on the model at the moment.

I painted up the 28mm version of Sharpe in my usual way of base coat, wash and a couple of highlights. I made the highlights a bit brighter than for the larger 54mm model to make them pop a bit more.

That’s this project done for at the moment at least whilst I wait for Harper’s figure to be released. Although I have started considering what other 28mm figures might join Sharpe in the Peninsula, so there might be other additions before then.

A little bit of concerted effort on a Sunday morning allowed me to finish painting up Sharpe.

In terms of painting, the main difference between my approach on this larger 54mm model compared to a 28mm figure was not using any washes, lining recesses instead. I used more layers when highlighting areas, with glazes to them smooth out, and generally didn’t push highlights to the same brightness as I would for a smaller figure.

I’m pretty happy with the end result, especially in keeping the Rifles green quite dark.

Updates are going to be sporadic, with the occasional work in progress images as and when I remember to take them.

I’ve pretty much just laid down the base colours on the 54mm Sharpe model and started on painting his face. I’m trying to build up layers a bit more than I would with smaller models, and trying to make the highlights less stark.

Looking at the picture below, I’m slightly horrified at all the white specks where I failed to cover the model with the base coats. Easy to rectify, but I can’t believe how many gaps there are!
