Draconis Does… Battletech

About the Project
I have a number of different projects on the go or upcoming, one of which involves getting some Battletech minis ready for hopefully playing the Battletech Aces Scouring Sands Alpha Strike cooperative campaign. It’s been a great many years since I last played Batteltech, and that was using the more detailed Classic rules. However, the idea of a cooperative campaign is what drew me back. The Scouring Sands box contains the enemy mechs required, so I will start out with them. In the Alpha Strike box there a some more mechs… but I may have to buy some other packs perhaps once I decide on which mechs I want to run for the player side.

Clan Jade Falcon ‘Aces’ enemies ready for deployment
28th April 2026
And here they are all together.
Next up for this project will be the player forces. However, I have yet to decide on which mechs I will be using. I plan to play a run through co-op, so will only be providing half the number for that, and likely will also make a full size force in case I want to play solo or run through it with my wife. I also then need to decide on a colour scheme for them 😊
But, before that I really must make a start on my Spring Clean Challenge, as I am quite far behind…..
Bane finished
28th April 2026
Last up was the Bane, the largest of the bunch. Yet again this received the same process as the rest, being refined with each iteration. Not much more to say than that 😊
Marauder 2C
23rd April 2026
Haven’t had a lot of hobby time this past week, but have just managed to finish the Marauder 2C.
Again this has followed the same painting process as the rest, but since it is a bit larger the green edge highlighting seemed to go on even longer 😊
Thunderbolt
16th April 2026
Onto the next, following the same process.
This seemed to have even more edge highlights 😳
This one has a smaller canopy, so I tried adding some other pops of colour by adding some orange on the shoulders and other bits.
I also used my smallest brush for the freehand work and the numbers and ‘falcons’ were a bit neater.
Just two to go from the Souring Sands box, but they are the biggest two….
Rifleman
14th April 2026
I followed the same process on this model as the rest.
It also had the extra light green edge highlights and free hand attempts for logos and numbers. (No gundam stickers on this one).
Again it wasn’t until I finished the cockpit (thinned yellow contrast, edge highlights in ivory, gloss varnish) that it felt like it came together.
I added some small colour pops with the laser barrel lenses.
Fulcrum Heavy Hovertanks
11th April 2026
Decided to work on these two next up.
After the basic steps the panels were not very well defined, so I applied a thinned black to mark in the panels.
Then I added extra edge highlights to the green. As well as the black.
For the finishing stages I added details to the guns and missile pods, added white striping to the sides using some old gundam stickers, and endeavoured to add some representation of clan marking to the side. This was a black circle, with blue inside (probably started too small). I then added a vague birdlike shape with brighter green to represent the Jade Falcon.
Finished tanks
Summoner ready
10th April 2026
This chap was painted in the same way as the previous.
However, for this one I went an extra stage with the edge highlights. They pop better on the model, but up close on the black they look a little crude.
I also added some gundam stickers (the red triangle on the front chest and the Asian writing on the top left rear) and some more detailed free hand attempts for the logos.
The 109 was harder to write, not least as the chest panel is only 1mm x 2.5mm, and my eyes are old….
Locust deployed
6th April 2026
I have rolled out the same process onto the next mech, the Locust IIC.
Same black panels and metallic joints. Starting out with blocking them all out in black.
Metallic sections were picked out, washed, then highlighted. I also went back in with thinned black to define the leg pistons.
The black panels were given some grey highlights.
Canopy again picked out with yellow wash, and ivory highlights, followed by gloss.
For this mech I tried adding some freehand, adding the number 117 (easier lines to paint) to it’s right shoulder and side of left leg, and some ‘faux’ Falcon shapes to left shoulder and right front leg panel.
I have missed several mould lines on this (and others) sadly.
When I come to work on the player forces I will need to ensure better prep.
