Its not bending the rules at all, those are the rules, plain and simple. I’ve used this in practically every game of 5th edition I’ve ever played, unless I wanted my lemans to be able to split their fire against hoard armies with few long range AT units they come as a squadron of 3.

no, it just means you need to get 50% of one of the other two tanks in cover, since the leman russ can fire its turret in addition to its normal 1+defensive weapons and move up to 6″ getting one of them in cover isn’t normally too difficult, unless you’re playing on a board with next to no terrain and you have no other vehicles.
I wouldnt call that bending the rules either. Gives another incentive to squadron. Nice tactic I’d say.

I am not sure but can a vehicule shoot when hidden by smoke. I know my vehicule cannot fire if it is using the smoke luncher, in that case above it is ok, the way I see it, the tank get the cover from the other “smoked” tank. So it may be hidden from the vindicator but on plaine site from the predator. this is not “area terrain” created by the smoke. In a game I may allow the opponent to hide in the smoke but not fire, or a regular cover save from what is hidden by the “smoked” tank and allow him to shoot with the other one.
According to the rules vehicles in squadrons always ignore each other for line of sight, regardless of smoke, but it blocks line of site for any unit not in its squadron just the same as it would without smoke, but depending on your markers for smoke you and your opponent might agree that the marker blocks LOS or any line drawn within 1″ of the hull is blocked etc.
In fluff reason it wouldn’t make sense and be unrealistic, but in the textbook style rulebook, it would work, total full on cheddar right there for you lol
A stationery squadron should probably be treated as separate vehicles, since the squadron rules are obviously meant to represent moving units that cover each others weak spots or switch positions to spread damage and confuse the enemy shooting back, since the biggest benefits and weaknesses of the squadron are designed to keep them moving.
That was actually very useful. After all cover saves are currently important part of 40k.
