Just seen something posted on the TANKS public Facebook page. Shows a Team Yankee version of TANKS is coming soon. They appear to be slides from a presentation, but it says coming October 2018.
Looks like a new damage deck and upgrades, plus rules on using HELICOPTERS in your forces! The damage deck will have helicopter specific effects too.
Also shown are previews of 4 expansions; Soviet T-72, British Chieftain, German Leopard 2 and French AMX-30
This is fantastic. Just got TANKS at UKGE and already bulked up to 11 tanks for it. I love the idea of bringing helos into the game but I can’t quite work out how their rules would go.
One of the slides is a little blurry, but you can just about make out a bit of the rules for helicopter movement. Looks like they use the same movement arrow as the tanks, but before moving you have to set the models altitude to HIGH or LOW.
I think the move to WWIII was an obvious one for GF9, seeing the large number of tank models available for Team Yankee already. Now with the helicopters we will maybe see some of the AA tanks get in on the action.
Reaction I have seen was mixed, one person saying the game was ruined (then again no-one has played the game yet outside of GF9 as far as I know, so how does he know that?) some saying you might as well just play TY or Flames of War (in some ways I can see their point with Team Yankee). Me, I prefer skirmish games now, and I already play TANKS, so I’ll be buying this.
Thats great to hear. I was on the tanks forums months ago and somebody had designed some TY tanks to test out. For me i like alittle more detailed tanks rules then FOW, and tanks is the way to go. I enjoy “what a tanker” again a system which could be used for any year of battle….
Helicopters will make an interesting addition to the game. I find WW2 tanks more iconic, and would like to see them flesh out the game with basic rules for arty, anti-tank guns, small infantry squads.
Look forward to it. Although FoW/TY aren’t exactly difficult games to play having options is always a good thing. I like the idea of being able to play shorter skirmish type games. And also just to paint one-off tanks sometimes.
Adding in helicopters sounds good, although we’ll have to see how it is done. I don’t know why people are so quick to see negative sides and nobody is forced to play nor does it take resources away from other things.
TANKS is a fun “beer and pretzels” game rather than in any way a serious wargame, although there is real tactical challenge for those who look for it. I think the starter set cost around £15 or so when it came out, which was pretty much a no-brainer. It makes for a great “gateway game” for friends that are wargames-curious as it is very easy to pick up and learn and small to carry around – particularly if you use the 2D terrain it comes with, and covers the main bases of the genre – manoeuvre, angle of attack, weight of fire, cover etc. Expansions are at pocket-money prices, which makes it a great game for kids to take up, and of course for BF/GF9 it makes for another avenue to recover a return from their investment in plastic tanks.
An expansion into Cold War sounds fun in the same vein. For me as an established gamer with 15mm WWII armies and a Team Yankee army already, it gives me another option for those gaming nights when you really can’t cope with a heavy game and just want to roll dice and have a laugh, for minimal outlay.
