Renegade Bringing Back 2010’s D&D Ravenloft Board Game
September 8, 2026 by brennon
Remember the old Dungeons & Dragons board games by Wizards of the Coast? Back in the day, there was a series of board games, including Wrath of Ashardalon (the one I had), Castle Ravenloft and The Legend of Drizzt. Well, Renegade Game Studios is bringing back Castle Ravenloft, with pre-orders available now ahead of a release in February 2027.

If you've not played these games before, they were one-to-five player adventures in a classic dungeon-delving setup. You will take on the role of one of many heroic adventurers who have been "invited" to Castle Ravenloft by the master himself and now you need to loot treasure, fight monsters and finally face down the terrifying Strahd.

You can play through these adventures by yourself, or you can join together with a group of friends and play through the various adventures together. Each of the quests can be played in an hour or less so it's a great one to break out rather than delving into the better but MUCH longer quests in games like Gloomhaven/Frosthaven.
The Standard Edition of the game comes with all of your various components for gameplay but also five Heroes, thirty Monsters and seven Villains. As well as being a good set of figures for the game, they were also excellent for someone wanting to expand their Dungeon Master model collection.
There is also a Premium Painted version of the game available to pre-order, which comes with pre-painted miniatures. You can see some examples of the pre-painted figures on the back of the box above. So, WizKids-level stuff.

That should be enough for anyone who doesn't care that much to just dive in and have some fun without having to do the hassle of the hobby! It is also significantly cheaper to get the unpainted standard version of the game, so I imagine that will factor into your decision-making.
It doesn't particularly look like there has been much of a change in the components that you get in the box, although some artwork and layout have changed. It will be interesting to see if any of the issues with the rules have been ironed out. I should say, these games were actually pretty challenging! They didn't pull any punches!
Could you be tempted to go back in time to check out Castle Ravenloft as a Dungeons & Dragons board game?

I still have the original version. Not played it in years.
