Happy Sunday CoGs, OTTers and how’s it goin’ Backstagers? (watches for involuntary shoulder wiggling).
Gotta have the wiggle in…
Because they’re French, well that’s more coffee spat over my workbench Ben 😳🤣
I think the biggest thing I noticed about getting older was that my painting sessions have reduced in length but I now have the time to do more. Mainly due to eyesight strain but also patience of doing repetitive tasks.
As for game duration, I think I’ve probably gone to the opposite extreme. I am working on a four year project to play, most likely, three long games over one weekend. It is however a passion project that I’m getting a lot of enjoyment from so the games are more of an excuse to do it than the principle reason
Happy Sunday
02:00 Oh MY!
06:00 ‘murricaaaaaaaaa?
10:45 We wittnes the death of Ben live on screen?
31:00 almost every week. but I try 😉
32:00 Square Bases XD
35:00 speeeeeed
37:00 I must have done something right with my child. My daughter was (during summer holidays) at a gaming event for children and she and her friend played “Tsukuyumi – full moon down” for 4 hours or something?! XD
50:00 “Bevor du auch nur ein Glitzern in den Augen deiner Eltern warst”
53:45 “Food for thought”
56:45 Oh look, that lassie from Heilung.
1:00:00 oh my. I wouldn’t even know how to put that into writing for the English speaking audience. Pön-t-jy?
1:11:30 ah the lovely silence
Where is my coffee?
1:00:00 Nice try on the attempt at helping us with the pronouncing things. I did some German and Afrikaans so think I know how to do it. I’m not sure the umlaut will help the team much though. That vowel sound is like the ‘er’ in her.
WTF … I am virtually 52 everyone of you is younger than I am . I have no issues with building or Painting models. I use magnifying glasses but that’s down to a having had cataracts but that was due to a genetic condition nothing to do with age.
We have several retired guys in our club who are in their 60s and 70s they still regularly paint and build figures. 🤣
The only thing I will concede is I prefer sitting down and playing rather than standing up playing 🤣
My hands still hurt, Rob! Damnable hands!
Being the wrong side of 50, and suffering more from dropsies and cramp I’m finding the Artis Opus goose egg to be a great help. Don’t get me started on eyesight though, magnifiers do the job, but I’m not a fan of wearing them.
Best episode for ages. Unhinged in parts. Well done sirs, chapeau!
On a similar note regarding age. I made a video last year about; At what age do you stop making purchases?
Well done on your Golden Button and showing @ewokkebab that Gasland cars are better with bases.
agree with Jerry about the tendency for games these days to focus on being quick and efficient. Sometimes that is a good thing though, as mentioned, if youre going to a club, its good to be able to get a couple games in, whether its different games, or the same game against different people. Its also good for event days, for example my group is running a trench crusade narrative event in october, a one day event and we’re planning for everyone to be able to get 4-5 games in.
however i do also enjoy the long games, especially if you have the time to do it. My friend and I love a bit of Old World, and will happily spend all day plodding our way through it. The longest game we’ve done for Old World took 2 weekends to complete, and we loved it and want to do it again at some point.
For Ben’s point on assembling miniatures, i don’t think age is the only reason why assembling miniatures is a pain in the ass. 10-20 years ago, assembling a space marine for example, the smallest component was the head, which was relatively chunky, lots of minis were very few parts, or even single piece. My bretonnian men at arms that i use for Old world, the body is in one piece, you glue the arms and head on and youre basically there
but a lot of “modern” miniatures these days, as sculpting and manufacturing has improved, the part count for the minis has shot up, and the size of those parts has gone down. Take, again using GW as an example, the new MESBG Rohan Warriors and Hill tribesmen…THE HEADS ARE IN TWO F£$!ING PARTS!, the bulk of the head, and then a tiny slither that is the face….i dont care how old you are, thats a pain in the ass for anyone to assemble. Some models from other companies, the arms are in 3 parts, the upper, the lower and the hand, or you get a leg but the front half of the foot is a separate piece. Ok sure this might allow for better poses, detail and so on, but you’ll never know because youll clip the part and it’ll shoot across the room never to be found again, or youll be trying to glue it, dropping it 50 times until its just a lump of dust and other crap from your carpet…that is assuming you manage to find the damn thing
Yeah, the over-designing of some minis is really making assembly a PITA.
I haven’t had the courage to open the new Ork boys to see the inevitable jigsaw build of them. I just hope there’s some useful cutable parts.
Great show as usual guys.
As I have got older, I am more enthusiastic for the hobby than ever before. At the recent Hereward Wargames Show I was speaking to a former gamer in his 70s who has dropped out of the hobby and it made me wonder if I’m the weird one, as I am looking forward to doing more hobby when I retire.
Apart from dodgy eyesight, which has been a lifelong thing, I can honestly say that thankfully I have no physical issues impeding my enjoyment. Then again, I am only 55 so things may change in the next 20 years, god willing I get them to enjoy.
The only real change in my hobby attitude that I can say is observable, is that I now have no patience for games or opponents I don’t enjoy playing with. Wonky rulesets or miserable try-hards are just something I have no time for now that my time on this earth is shorter than it once was.
I guess Justin has never heard of the film Zombeavers?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7onFrBK_hKE
Zombeavers… sir, you forget to add the pivotal classic of cult cinema the likes of Petey Wheatstraw (the Devil’s son in law) .. Zoombies
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoombies
Sounds like a modern classic. The wiki says they made a sequel: Aquarium of the Dead. “Sir, the fish in this tank are killer zombies” “Well, I guess we won’t go swimming in that tank then, same as always”. Crisis averted. The End.
Happy Sunday!
I have to admit to relating way too much to this week’s topic. The more I watch OTT the more I believe Gerry and I were separated at birth. I’ve never been one prone to FOMO but if I really like something, I’m all in. My ridiculous Wolsung and Crisis Protocol collections are testament to that. As I get older (61 as I write this) I find fewer things light my imagination or even hold my hobby interest and I consider myself pickier than I was in my youth.
I won’t lie, the arthritis in my hands started in my 40s and has only grown stronger but the best way to old it off is to use the joints so I still try to paint every day. Like @brucelea, I find my sessions are shorter or require more breaks to get up and move around than in my youth and having been on a teacher’s schedule for 30+ years, I can longer paint through the night. Accepting my need for high powered reading glasses to paint details was a milestone. I have begun painting larger scale minis and even busts in order to better see and paint details. No matter how old I get, I hope I never lose the desire to try/learn new techniques.
Again, agreeing with Gerry, it is all about having fun with all aspects of the hobby so while I may no longer want to play weekend long games of Warhammer, I do appreciate a game that takes a couple hours to tell it’s story. I built and painted all this stuff so let’s see it on the table for a while. I also like to take narrative photos during games and one mustn’t rush that.
Awesome show guys, maybe not feeling the old just yet but ‘Toddler parent’ is currently my tune… *opens hobby box* *stares at minis for 5mins* *packs up to get daughter back to bed* repeat until you fall asleep 😅
This weeks show felt almost like a movie review, for young benjamino I would add that Jonathan Pryce was also the lead in Brazil. So Terry Gilliam clearly enjoyed working with him.
Pacific is just simply not as good and its not because it is not as well made or not as well performed etc. The Pacific theatre is just so bleak and is so often poor desperate souls rotting on tropical islands that it just has such a different feel to it, for me at least
I think you all need to watch Zombie Beavers!
I’m fortunate not to have any major maladies that interfere with my hobbying. My eyes are going but that is down to a career spent looking at computer screens as it is that focal length that has worn out. It turns out I am getting a bit old to be resilient after a tiring weekend playing in a tournament. I’m knackered today and not much good for anything other than losing at Saga 😀
Happy Sunday……At 65 I fully love my hobby, all of it, the building, the painting just the old eyesight, but that what glasses are for. Solo play you dont have the crap of an opponent being a dunce/ doebag.Never been so happy in my hobby as I am now.
Of course you’re not too old. I’m 71 and still enjoy collecting, painting and playing Solo Wargames, building terrain and wondering if I will liv eloping enough to make a dent in my lead/plastic/resin mountain LoL
I’m 56 and still love the hobby. Need glasses to paint now. lol…. Prefer a nice chair during a game now. Only problem i have with gaming is I now have about 40 years worth of game stuff to store-minis, terrain, paint, books. I could have far bigger problems! Lets keep rolling dice and pushing minis on a table.
Now the XLBS Showtime
Hay GILFs can be horny furker too guys 👍👍😄

Fab show this week guys 👍 😄
