### Start of shameless copy and paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.ontabletop.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/
https://www.ontabletop.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.ontabletop.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/
### End of shameless copy and paste ###
Question of the week:
- With the barrage of new games in the last few years: how you do find the ones that fit you and your play style?
And now back to the show.
May 1, 2026 at 6:43 pm #1972870Pledge: varnish the Dreamscape Collision minis (they got painted in just one day!)
Answer: I think mostly I go by gut feeling. If it looks interesting I take a deeper dive into the rules, lore and how to play. Rarely I find a game like Dreamscape Collision that doesn’t really appeal to me but is quit fun to just play.
Music:
May 1, 2026 at 6:59 pm #1972871Pledge: Get the next unit for the SCC Dogs of War finished. This time I’ve got some forest brigands that bear a striking resemblance to a certain band of Merry Men.
Answer: I can never be certain about a game system until I’ve played it. Watching Let’s Plays is very helpful and I’ll try and do that first before buying. Reading through helps too as I’ve been put off by certain mechanics or intentions within rules before. However, nothing beats actually trying the system out and pushing some miniatures around. Only then will I know if it is one for me.
May 1, 2026 at 7:01 pm #1972872Oh forgot to put the link to the pictures 8)
May 1, 2026 at 7:36 pm #1972873Pledge: get back to doing something hobby after taking a week off of pretty much everything and watching a LOT of playoff hockey. Only one Canadian team remains…
New games: I do buy new games, sometimes; usually just the rules to start, which get read and then shelved most of the time. Really inspiring things or nostalgia tends to drive my miniature buying. He-Man is the most recent one; I have a big stack of MotU minis for later use.
And now something in drop B tuning:
May 2, 2026 at 12:38 am #1972879Pledge, varnish the few peices recently finished. Have a tidy up in the hobby room. Pin the chaos dwarves to bases and do some stuff on them.
How do I find new games, too easily. I did buy Sand off the back of last weeks thread. Need to find a 3d printer that does want a fortune in postage.
In general it will either be the models tempt me (fun to paint, have ideas on a scheme or Ilike a franchise), and then looking further the game play appeals. Or I hear interesting things about the rules, like the model. However, then it has to pass the do I new terrain for this? (Or can I just set dress current). When am I going to work on it. At that point I will kept an eye on it, and ponder. A good starter set can do a number on me once its on the one to watch list
May 2, 2026 at 2:19 am #1972881Pledge: Finish the skintones of two units and see if I can knock out two sets of shields for them. All this and see if I have a workable entry for this month’s paint comp.
An avalanche of new games is right. I’ve relied on the news here on OTT and random mentions on YouTube. The trouble seems to be figuring out play style. Its taken years to narrow down that. Having a two person game with skirmish or small army scale combat seems right. I’m now comfortable with the craziness of Army building on theme. The issue now comes in with getting better terrain than is offered at my FLGS.
Since we’ve had an entry of prog rock I’ll add some more odd time signature music
May 2, 2026 at 6:58 am #1972882@dags I wanted to buy SAND. Sent them a message about no shipping to Canada on eBay; they didn’t even respond.
I guess they are “vastly successful”? /sarcasm
@horati0nosebl0wer there are somehow, improbably, several piles of gravel-filled snow still around. Hard to believe! But it’s been a glorious 20c lately, so the snow can’t win. Until Victoria Day long weekend, when it inevitably snows. Why? Because it’s Alberta. ☹️
May 2, 2026 at 9:54 am #1972899Pledge: Finish painting my Asgardians for MCP.
When something new comes out…
I look for an unboxing video that shows what I am getting.
Then I try to find a review.
Look for a how to play video.
Find someone actually playing the game rather than a demo by the company that makes it.
See if the play time fits into the amount of time I normally get with friends for playing.
If the duration is longer than two hours then it probably means I’m playing solo.
That’s usually enough to make a decision.
May 2, 2026 at 11:56 am #1972900This week’s pledge is to keep working on the figurine I’m painting up.
- With the barrage of new games in the last few years: how you do find the ones that fit you and your play style? – Picking board games that take month’s to play through gives me plenty of time to pick the next one, plus there are very few of them on the market to pick from.
May 2, 2026 at 12:11 pm #1972901Pledge – Paint more Orks and then dream about the new Orks in the Armageddon box set
With the barrage of new games in the last few years: how do you find the ones that fit you and your play style?
I have never played a tabletop battle, sad to say, more of the collecting and painting aspect for me, mostly. I certainly hear a lot more about other game systems through OTT. It’s amazing to see so much variety and how large the tabletop ecosystem is; some of the jargon, however, is completely indecipherable without some game time under your belt. All the systems look fun, but how they actually play, I have no idea. Mostly, I let the models lead me.
May 2, 2026 at 3:53 pm #1972954I have a challenge headed my way this week for the Marvel Crisis Project and it might take me some time to complete because I want to make a good job of it…
This is on it’s way…

Airbrush will definitely be required.
May 3, 2026 at 12:31 am #1972956@grantinvanman thats disappointing, book is nicely presented and looks solid. My one criticism is the character cards seem to be there to cut out, pondering how I get round that.
So far I have completely failed to work on my pledges and gotten distracted
May 3, 2026 at 2:28 am #1972957@dags maybe colour copy the cards? Enjoy SAND! Lucky to have got a copy, too bad indeed they didn’t take the time to even respond.
May 3, 2026 at 12:14 pm #1972966Interesting takes on the approach to new games. Especially @danlee since that’s nothing that is ever going to happen to me. Not counting RPGs all games conclude on the day they are started. I just can’t let things sit around and take brainspace for a week or something XD
Now, XLBS and then we’ll see what the Sunday holds.
