Trench Crusade - Lazarist Prophet
I was away for work in another country for a month, came back to my birthday and the thought of painting more tartan was… unappealing. So what could I do? Paint another of the 15 projects on my desk? NO! Buy more stuff and start a new project!
I had a religious experience; I went to a new hobby shop that opened in Glasgow. Element Games, which I had purchased from in the past online. This may not be new for a lot of you, but I have had two hobby shops for most of my life and it’s more suited to RPG’s and CCG’s than models, A1 books and comics, the other is Games Workshop. My choice was a shop where they couldn’t care less and a shop that pretended to care as they were whipped into doing it.
I went into a shop where I knew what I wanted, they had what I wanted, and I paid and left without being harassed. I thought this was impossible. So, I left a shop having left my money behind and picked up some Moonstone (yes, I now have a local stockist my wallet is shaking) and Trench Crusade Carcass Front and being happy. This has never occurred before.
I picked the Lazarist Prophet to start I really have no idea if that’s correct, I picked it as it was the most leadery person. (No, I don’t know the rules)
Got to painting and thought I would do this quick and dirty. It fits the world and I don’t need another long-term project. Couple of weeks and smash out a warband… No, I couldn’t, I painted it and was not happy, slobbering streaking grime on it was doing the model a disservice. It was messy it fitted the world, but I felt it could be more. Instead of two weeks painting a warband I spend 2 weeks painting a model (on and off).
The first model of a game is the most important if you have been doing this for a while. It sets the theme, effort, pallet for the faction and sets the techniques. If you’re just picking up your fist models to paint, I suggest going wild, but I am too old for that.
Used hatching for the cloth a mix of leather and cloth bandages / straps and went for metallic paint rather than NMM but it’s heavily weathered. basing I kept simple most had some kind of base, so I just added acrylic sand paste to smooth transitions. For the skin I wanted a dirty soot type effect, I looked at miners’ skin tones. With all that incense it’s bound to be around the same.
I also decided to do a freehand. I couldn’t make out what was in the official artwork some kind of William of Orange thing. Changed this to Jesus. But still don’t think it looks like Jesus so insert your favourite saint.
I really should learn the lore or at least the models for this. Anyway, here is the result.
Guildball Masons
Guildball masons done. Time for the brewers but I may paint something else in-between. don’t know yet. Need time to gear myself up for painting tartan again.
These are very fun it’s actually fantastic you can download the game 2 teams a special character and terrain to 3D print at home for free, without breaking laws!
I have my eyes on a few other teams but will wait to play unless the mood takes me.
May take some better pictures later. My backdrop of jank does not sit well with me. it’s two bits of foam board with black paper in-between.
Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka
This took way too long. Almost 3 weeks. I have no chance of painting an ork army any time soon but this was fun if you like Hazard striped and checks.
Luckily i do! and I remember to take some more in progress pictures this time.
I think I need to work on speed. thats what my next project will be. Speed and quality, which means cost will be sky high as you cant have all 3?
Steel Legion
Finished something from the desk today.
Steel legion squad. I had mixed feelings starting this. I didnt like these when they came out as they seemed like Valhallan Ice Warrior resculpts and in a big way i think they are.
Painting them gave me old school feels, and actually made me sort of thankful in some ways for modern models and apprecieative of older models. The details are just not there. Some things are simplified and the shapes are unbroken with too much detail. So good and bad.
I stalled on these even though I enjoyed them, so in the end just glas they are done and they can join their brothers in DKK. 1 more squad to go of these and about 20 more squads of DKK. Next up as I am taking the good then bad is Ghazghull Thraka, just a shame I dont have a Yarrik to go with him.
Lion El'Jonson
After some time starting on and off I finally finished my first model of 2026.
Took quite sometime, I don’t know where it went. Regardless calling it done.
Leaving the rest of the images unedited direct from camera to save me time only one in progress but it’s an interesting one as I thought I called the gold done before reworking it all… That’s where the time went!
Next up will be some steel legion that have been on my desk half done for a while trying to take it want to do, then should do in turn to avoid a burn out.
It’s been a fun if annoying model. What’s better than a cape on a cape on a cape.
Until next time.
Stay a while and listen
This project was supposed to be just a dumping ground for finished pictures. So first of all sorry for breaking my own rules. Also it’s been a while so i think you can forgive it.
I have been doing things on and off. though not playing games, as that seems to have died. RIP War Gaming 1992 – 2025 (for me). I don’t know if the final game has been played but it will continue in board games. Life has moved on for my friend group and the first casualty has been gaming.
A random project that came cross my desk was a binned army rescue. This was saved from the bin (not my bin). Which was a lot of resin death korps of krieg, along with some elysian drop troops and some steel legion and a few other bits and bobs. I then found my self in GW FOMO land and got the launch box as well as a couple of tanks. This project is for me to paint but then sell as I have no need or want of a 40k army.
I have painted around 40+ 40k armies and it kills me, all mostly large, it kills me because of how I choose to paint. I paint these like my infinity models but there are so many of the little guys to do.
I have recently tried to break this up, I got a forest dragon when GW done a limited release which is about 30% done, Lion El Jonson which is about 20% done and an Eldar and ork model. While working on the Alien board game models which are surprisingly fun however infuriating to paint (scale issue). So starting and not finishing anything which is historically not like me. Which leads to the completionist in me never posting things 😊.
Finished tanks middle being fully magnetised I also designed and printed some holders for spare Leman Russ turrets to use them as emplacements I still have the 2 full other tanks to paint. So that’s where this supposed to be side project is at plus a few painted full squads and some others in progress.
I have also done my kitchen and bathroom this year as well as got a cat, lol. So everything is moving forward, hope to have more next year.
See you then!
